Warm greetings from Carroll College. Below is word of Shirley Baker's retirement as Director for International Programs.
Message from Dr. John Scharf, Academic Dean: Many of you already know that Shirley Baker will be leaving her position as our Director of International Programs. But, in case you haven't already heard, I am now making the official announcement. Shirley is resigning her position after a long distinguished career at Carroll so that she can return to her home in California and be closer to her children.
Shirley started at Carroll as Director of International Programs in January 1990. In July 1996, Shirley left Carroll for a while when her late husband Jeff Baker (former Carroll Academic VP and Montana Commissioner of Higer Ecuation) took the presidency of Luther College in Iowa. She returned to us in August 1999 to resume her duties as Director of International Programs. During her time of service she greatly expanded the study abroad opportunities for Carroll students and faculty, and she recruited significant numbers of international students to attend Carroll. Among other significant achievements, Shirley started our Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) program and our Carroll Intensive Language Institute (CILI) for foreign students. More recently she has been instrumental in building relationships between Carroll and the College of the Marshall Islands and between Carroll and the State Islamic University in Indonesia. In the academic year 2002-03, Shirley was a Fulbright Senior Scholar to Indonesia and, last summer, she had a Senior Fulbright Specialist appointment there.
Shirley plans to work as a consultant for international programs after she leaves Carroll, and in that capacity she has graciously offered her services to Carroll on an as needed basis until we hire a new director. Please join me in giving best wishes to Shirley and asking for God's blessings on her as she prepares to leave Carroll.
