Nobel Peace laureate Wangari Maathai urged countries to take a leaf out of Japan's book by practicing efficient environmental protection aimed at cutting down "mottainai" wastefulness.
"This concept is extremely useful. I must congratulate the Japanese people. I don't know how they developed that in their culture. They are very efficient in the way they use their resources. That is a very good value. We should call on all the world to learn to be efficient in the way we use our resources because we have a limited amount of resources on this planet. That is the whole issue about the fragility of the planet. We have just so much, so unless we learn to reuse, there will not be enough for us in the whole world and for future generations, so I support that very much."
