The first time I heard Ed Van Halen we were driving in a rental car in Texas headed to San Antonio having played Austin the previous night, this was in early 1978 (I guess). It's not a long drive between those two cities and I was just kinda daydreaming and not really paying attention to the local Rock FM station when all of sudden an aggressive and vicious guitar jumped right out of the radio speakers and got right up in my face. Woah! Wow!! What th'?? Who dat? How's he doing that?? Later that summer we shared the same bill with Van Halen along with AC/CD, Foreigner, and Aerosmith at Bill Graham's Day On The Green at the Oakland Colleseum. Up to that point this was probably the biggest show either of us had ever played, 65,000 people. It was a great day and the photo of Pat Thrall, ED VH, and myself was taken backstage. I've always thought that EVH was the greatest electric guitar player since Jimi Hendrix. Ed set a high bar for aspiring guitarists, contemporaries, and players like me that had already been around a bit. He leaves a huge legacy. And he was always a super nice guy whenever we bumped into each other.
I've attached a link to "Jump" which I thought was an incredibly cool song and the keyboards were something I was very hot on at the time. Plus Ed's guitar the drums and bass...I really thought they were banging on all big block cylinders on this track. So...RIP EVH...people will air-guitar in tribute to your musical talents infinitum.
