ENGLISH DEBATE ON SOCIAL TOPICコミュのWhat do you think of the ENGLISH ONLY site ?

Recently, I left the ENGLISH ONLY site, because I felt like it turned into a slug fest with people who love to start trouble and get on people's nerves.

Ironically, I don't like debating on social topics, especially when it turns ugly. I think it's a waste of time arguing or insulting someone on the Internet, just because your views are different.

Do you guys feel the same way about the ENGLISH ONLY site? If so, what are your likes or dislikes about the site? What do you think of the nastiness that we find once in a while on certain sites?

Hi Chris.

There are two things that I don't like about the English Only community now.

First, like you say, there are certain individuals who seem hell-bent on causing trouble there. Some of them are trolls. Others find fun in insulting the other posters just for the heck of it. They just won't go away. Eventually, all the good people like you will leave.

Second, I don't really care for those who come in to share their personal life as if the community was their diary. They are definitely less harmful than the first group, but I still wish we had fewer of them there.

DanceStar,

I am sure there will be a lot of positive feedback. Mine isn't needed. :)

That I agree with you. Sometimes people start ranting about their personnal life, but can do it on their own page. They don't have to bring it on open forums.

Good point. I do thank you for replying. I also go the answer I was looking for.

And there are some topics that are not bad. It just depends on the answers that people give.

Well, meeting interesting people with a intelligent point of view was always interesting on ENGLISH ONLY. I got to make friends with you, Tokyo OG and others, that was also another good thing of the site.

I also made friends with TWENTY TWO who tried to convince me to stay on the site. But now that he was kicked off, maybe I got tired of people always getting upset easily.

Me there are millions of people I don't agree with on the Internet, but I'm not going to spend my time or energy with the hopes of browbeating them or have them remove. I'll leave myself .

And besides, if people want to debate, they should do it on this site. Is ENGLISH ONLY synonymous to DEBATE ONLY?

>> But now that he was kicked off...

Oh was he? On what grounds? I didn't always agree with him, but I don't think he's done anything that warrants his removal from the forum...

Well, I'm not too sure he was kicked off, but some were complaining about his comments or thought of him as a wiseguy and a trouble maker. I think he left mixi on his own accord; maybe he was fed up, I'll never know the real story.
Chris,

Thanks! I guess I never really followed what he was up to.
I just joined this as well as that English Only thing. I'll see. Quite frankly, Sorry to hear that. I don't intend to control anyone on Mixi anyway. I try to look at what inspires me. If Mixi is meaningless, I'll quit Mixi all together, you know. There are lots of good folks aout there in our real lives. This is just virtual, yet I still hope to get good things out of it.

I guess many of the cummunities in Japanese are the same, ore even nastier. I don't have to be associated with them, just like how we live our real lives. The last thing I want is to be part of the pissing match, either as a participant or passive observer. If I don't like it, I'll get out. Anyhow, thanks for the tips!
I just got out of that community. At least, tried for a couple of weeks. Indeed, it was boring, but people tried to communicate in English. i would have wanted something more meaningful. I think I'll get out of this community as well. I'll stick to communities in Japanese as far as this Mixi stuff goes. If I really want to have heated discussions, I'll do that here in NY with my friends face to face. I like it better when I can see the face of the person I'm talking to. Well, adios then.
Chris,

IS debate about insulting people or ugliness?
I suspect not.

Say you have an everyday problem, like you and your friends want to decide where to go eat, and you all suggest places, and make arguments for why you should go there, but sometimes refute the arguments for suggestions for other places, is that “ugly”?

A san: “I want to go to that café because it is non-smoking. The air is clean.”

B san: “But it is next to a busy street so the air is polluted from the cars.”

Using this process you can solve the problem of not knowing the best place to eat in.
Everyone benefits.

That principle is exactly the same with debating social problems.
We al want to solve the social problems, so we must debate on how much they could possibly be solved, and what method to use. Are there any reasons these debates must devolve into mud slinging matches?

Next time you debate and someone insults you by calling you terrible, etc, you might consider saying “Maybe that’s true. Maybe I AM a terrible person. Even if I am, my being terrible does not mean my idea is incorrect. ”

Hopefully the mud slinger will realize that name calling is not relevant to debate and will stop insulting you.

(BTW, I do NOT think you are terrible. Just showing an example of what might be said.)

Happy debating!
I think it is important to distance oneself from the potential immaturity of an online forum and real life because the latter is so much more important and fulfilling.
