Hey everyone! I am 日本代表(Nippon Daihyo),Japanese girl, college student majoring in theatre arts in U.S. My ex-boyfriend is much older than me and a faculty member of one of a good University. But he didn't spend money more than me. We talked about this issue so many times but.......there were no solution. He is no longer my boyfriend but still keep in touch . Dose anyone differ in perceptions of the value of money with your partner? Gentlemen! Do you split the bill if you ate more than your girlfriend? How do you feel if she didn't pay for dinner? Sorry about my poor English, actually he speaks very good Japanese.....
Hi. I think it depends on the couple. It's more sensible for the higher earner to pay more, but it also can make one person more uncomfortable. Especially for some men. They don't want to be paid for by their "woman", ha ha! I think splitting the bill is perhaps the only way to go.
I agree. My ex-(Japanese)boyfriend told me that I didn't need to carry my wallet when I was with him.
(But I sometimes paid for my dinner by myself,of course.) So I expected that my boyfriend paid for me without say anything because he was higher earner and 9years older than me.
But,yes,it is true that splitting the bill is perhaps the only way to go.
Yeah! When I had my first boyfriend in the U.K., we always used to buy rounds of drinks in the pub. Later, one of my friends asked me if I always did that. She said it was a little unfair, because I drank 1/2 a pint, and my boyfriend drank a pint (twice as much), so he was getting a very good deal. After that, I used to buy every second round, and he was fine about that. If I hadn't said anything, I think that unfair drinking would have continued I think some people will just take advantage if they get the opportunity.
When I first came to Japan, and everyone was splitting the bill using calculators, at first that was a bit weird for me. If you did that in the U.K., people may think you are a bit stingy. But now I think it's a great idea, because it's fair then
