Please give me advice!!! I'm a J/girl and my b/f is OZ. We had a massive fight the other day and he said to me that I often didn't give him straight answers. All right, that's fair enough for him to get annoyed but I don't really understand what the straighy answer mean :(
This is my guess, when we are talking, he sometimes asks me questions. As it's not a yes/no question, I explain how I think or what I know. As you probably know, I think Japanese people tend to explain a thing from different aspects. So it's not gonna be a short simple answer. So my answer is like "think about this, the answer is A but there are some other aspects. Then think about that, the answer can be B." You know what I mean? I can't think of any good example right now but hope that makes sense.
I've just realized that in Japanese comversation, when you are talking about one thing, you look the topic from some different aspects. So you are saying some different things to explain your idea or thought. For Japanese, it's quite straight answer. Straight answer means, can be, to tell you how you feel or think, not only yes/no,you like or don't or good/bad. You know, things are complicated more often than not so you can't go " this is a, that is b. and that's it." It's quite normal in J/comversation I reckon but I don't know about another language or culture.
Have you had same sort of experience like you feel your J partner doesn't give you a straight answer? If so, please tell me what does straight answer mean!!!
Thank you sooooooo much Nico-chan.
It actually helped me a lot :)
My boyfriend doesn't speak Japanese, I mean conversational Japanese.
He knows something like " すみません、生中1つください。" though(笑)
Yeah, you are absolutely right. If he understood Japanese more, he could know what I say more.
Also my English isn't good enough to explain exactly how I feel or think so there are so many chances to missunderstand eachother.
Have you got any language or cultural problem between you girl friend?
I guess you understand Japanese a lot!
