November 15–17 Festival of Contemporary Japanese Women Poets With Rosa Alcalá, Takako Arai, Kiriu Minashita, Sawako Nakayasu, Kyong-Mi Park, Ryoko Sekiguchi & Cole Swensen This three-day festival brings an exciting cross-section of contemporary Japanese poets together to discuss writing that confronts womens’ contradictory roles in culture.

Rosa Alcalá is a poet and translator. She teaches at the University of Texas, El Paso.
Takako Arai was born in 1966 in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. Her newest collection of poetry is entitled Tamashi Dance. She contributes to and edits Mi’Te, a monthly publication featuring poetry and criticism.
Kiriu Minashita was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1970. After receiving the Gendaishitech Prize in 2003, she published her first collection of poetry, Sonic Peace, which was awarded the Nakahara Chuya Prize in 2006 and was nominated for the H-Prize. In 2007, her second book of poetry, Z-limit, will be published through Shichÿsha’s New Poets series.
Sawako Nakayasu was born in Yokohama, Japan, and has lived primarily in the United States since the age of six. Her books include Nothing fictional but the accuracy or arrangement and Clutch. She edits the journal Factorial, as well as the translation section for HOW2.
Kyong-Mi Park is a second-generation Korean living and writing in Tokyo. She has published numerous works of poetry and prose in major Japanese publications including La Mer, Waseda Bungaku, Ginka and Asahi Weekly.
Ryoko Sekiguchi was born in 1970 in Tokyo, and has lived in Paris since 1997. Her books in Japanese include Cassiopia Peca, (com)position, Hakkousei/dia-positive, Two Markets, Once again, Tropical Botanical Garden, all published by Shoshi Yamada.
Cole Swensen is the author of eleven books of poetry including Noon, The Book of a Hundred Hands, and Goest, which was a National Book Award Finalist. She is on the faculty of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
