Bombs across Baghdad kill 52

BAGHDAD (AP) — A roadside bomb exploded in Baghdad's oldest and largest wholesale market district, killing at least 24 people and wounding 35, part of a surge in bloodshed Wednesday that left 52 dead, authorities said.
Earlier, an explosives-rigged bicycle blew up near an army recruiting center in a city south of Baghdad, killing at least 12 people.

Annan tells Israel to lift blockade of Lebanon

JERUSALEM (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan renewed his demand that Israel lift its air and sea blockade of Lebanon in a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday, but won no commitment from Israel.
Olmert sidestepped the issue, saying only that he expects full implementation of a U.N.-cease-fire deal that ended 34 days of Israel-Hezbollah fighting.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — An air-traffic controller on duty when Comair Flight 5191 crashed told investigators that he had cleared the jet for takeoff but then turned away to perform "administrative duties" as the plane went down the wrong runway, a federal accident investigator said Tuesday.

WASHINGTON — The economy grew faster than initially thought in the April-June period as corporate profits rose strongly, suggesting that businesses are in a solid position to help offset a slowdown in consumer spending, a Commerce Department report indicated Wednesday.

Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of U.S. economic activity, rose 2.9% at a seasonally adjusted annual rate in the second quarter. Although that is far below the 5.6% increase in the first three months of the year, it was faster than the government's initial estimate of a 2.5% gain.
