Gustaf Norén sounds happy as he talks. And maybe a little tired.
- I don’t think that I ever before had such a good week.
On Friday Mando Diao started their Sweden tour with a gig back home in Borlaenge. On Saturday the whole band was thrilled by the first place on Tracks.
But on Thursday, two days before they started their tour, Gustaf Norén became a father.
- It’s a boy. A little Mando. This was the maximum.
Gustaf Norén was with his wife Pernilla when she gave birth to the baby named Josef.
- I was holding her hand. For me it was fear and adrenalin at the same time. I’ve never had these two feelings at the very same time. That was a rush through my body. A head-on collision with strong feelings. This lasted a few seconds. I think this was the most positive trauma I have ever experienced.
- Many friends of mine have kids already and they kinda incited me. I didn’t want to wait till 35 to become a father, Gustaf Norén says. And he says his son is an exact copy of him.
Playing the guitar
5-day-old Josef has already listened to Mando Diao music.
- I started to play the guitar for him. But he seems to like Bob Marley's “Survivor”. This is a vast flow, haha.
Gustaf Norén doesn't think that the birth of his son will collide in any way with his carreer.
- We have talked about how this would work with the job I have. You become more caring in some way. I have always been surrounded by a big family where you are protected. I like that role. No one is perfect. It’s a challenge.
Since Mando Diao is playing their autumn tour in Sweden Gustaf Norén will have the time to get home between their gigs.
He got such a kick from being a father that he wrote 3 new songs in 4 days.
- This was like something got unlocked now that Josef is born.
How will the new songs sound like?
- They are strong and hard. Harder than most of the songs I ever wrote before. I tried to make the melodies as beautiful as they could be. In the end there was very much blood and sweat.
Gustaf Norén is full of joy and beans.
- Every day with Mando is a new step upwards. When we reached the number 1 on Tracks it was such a thrill. You want to have it like that every day. You’re never satified. That’s life.
