Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Forsyth Institute

A postdoctoral research position for a highly motivated researcher is available in the Applied Molecular Photomedicine Laboratory (http://AMPL.forsyth.org), which is funded by the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research and is located at The Forsyth Institute, Boston. The successful candidate will have excellent training opportunities in a multi-disciplinary translational research environment of scientific, clinical and corporate entities.
The “Applied Molecular Photomedicine Laboratory” has launched the “Nano-Photo-Medicine Initiative” in collaboration with the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Northeastern University for targeting oral infection. The initiative will lead to the development of a unique research program in oral medicine based on multidisciplinary collaborative research efforts. The vision behind this initiative is to integrate Photomedicine with Nanotechnology. The successful candidate will use polymeric nanoparticles loaded with photoactive drugs as bacterial destruction systems with light-activated properties.

Start date: Immediately.

Requirements

A doctoral degree from a well-recognized institution and a strong background in microbiology (preferably in biofilm research) and microscopic techniques (mainly confocal scanning laser microscopy).
Demonstrated creativity and technical independence with molecular and biochemical techniques.
Strong communication and written skills a must. Willingness to collaborate with others and interest in translational medical science is key.
The ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as a willingness to share knowledge and expertise within a multidisciplinary team.

Postdoctoral Associate, MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, with the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Genomes, a NASA-funded collaboration between MIT, the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and Harvard Medical School. This effort is focused on building a life-detection instrument to be sent to Mars and carrying out related work to develop high-sensitivity, low-noise approaches to detect, sequence, and classify diverse life on Earth. The primary responsibility will be carry out collaborative and independent research and engineering activities including to design, build, and test instrument components such as a miniature nucleic acid extraction module or a miniature sequencer and to apply related technologies and capabilities to address major questions about genomics and the origin of life. This project is fully funded into 2012, and a two-year appointment is expected. REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. in a related discipline and experience in one or more of the following engineering areas: microfluidics, instrument design, mechanical engineering, electronics and printed circuit board design, optics, software engineering including microcontrollers or other embedded systems, and control system engineering. Experience with basic or advanced molecular biology lab techniques and related (genomics) disciplines (PCR, gel electrophoresis, RNA/DNA extraction, sequencing, bioinformatics) is desirable, but not required as long as the individual in willing to learn new skills. This position requires either U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

Staff Scientist, Ph.D. or M.D., DNA Medicine Institute

Job Description:
The DNA Medicine Institute is seeking a qualified Ph.D. or M.D. level Staff Scientist with a physical sciences background (applied physics, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, analytical chemistry, biophysics, chemistry) to help us develop a microfluidic technology for blood analysis. The individual will lead a wide-range of experiments related to cell counting, microfluidic mixing, microfluidic fabrication, microscopy, data collection, data analysis, and software analysis. The successful candidate will be important to developing a cutting-edge medical device and will develop and test hypotheses, keep a detailed laboratory notebook, maintain excellent written records, and have good communication skills. In addition, he/she will write grant proposals, patents applications, and publications. This is a significant opportunity for growth and to learn best of breed innovation and entrepreneurship. Requirements:
A minimum of a Ph.D. or M.D. with a successful post-doctoral fellowship is required. First author publications in significant publications a must. Prior industry experience is not necessary. The individual should have good references from a research supervisor. The ideal candidate should be motivated, detail driven, goal-oriented, and intellectually curious.

Description:

EMD Serono is seeking to appoint a motivated and well qualified scientist for the Protein Engineering and Monoclonal Antibody Technologies (PEAT) group within New Biological Entities (NBE) Technologies. He/she will be responsible for the Monoclonal Antibody Engineering needs of the group and head up a laboratory staff of three with a potential to grow.

This individual will report to the Head of PEAT at their facility in suburban Boston and will be part of an energetic team in a key strategic area of the Discovery organization within EMD Serono. In this regard, he/she will play an important role in the overall responsibility of NBE Technologies for the discovery, optimization and progression of the Company's biotherapeutics discovery pipeline.

As Scientist - Antibody Engineering the incumbent will have responsibilities including, but not limited to, the following:

-Leading a group of scientist and technicians in the Monoclonal Antibody Engineering laboratory
-Assuming responsibility for the humanization and optimization of antibody candidates generated by hybridoma- or phage display-technology.
-Managing the group and taking responsibility for its projects by driving and coordinating his/her direct reports in achieving the specific objectives of the respective research projects.
-Advancing antibody technologies within his/her own group as well as influencing the strategies on current and future technologies.
-Representing the monoclonal antibody department in specific antibody project teams.
-Taking responsibility for defining requirements for research projects and identifying potential constraints and risks.
-Use of problem solving skills in evaluating issues, and monitoring and initiating corrective actions where necessary.
-Taking responsibility for proposing new projects or amendments to existing projects to the Head of PEAT in the US.

Qualifications

-The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or biological sciences.
-This individual will be a highly motivated scientist with a proven track record in antibody engineering and must have several years of post-doctoral experience in an academic or industry setting.
-A strong background in molecular biology, with extensive experience in antibody engineering, antibody expression and purification, and biochemical and biophysical methods for the analysis of antibodies is required. An interest to work part-time at the laboratory bench is desirable.
-Familiarity with antibody phage display technology and affinity maturation, and interpretation of computational modelling of antibody-antigen interactions would be useful. Further, experience in preclinical development of therapeutic antibodies is desirable.
-It is desired that the candidate demonstrate an aptitude to interact constructively with others across multiple cultural backgrounds in a dynamic matrix structure. He/she must have the ability to collaborate with colleagues throughout the organization in research functions i.e., bio-informatics, protein and cell sciences and structural biology and in corporate functions i.e., business development, intellectual property.
-Further to this the candidate will possess strong communication skills, both oral and written. He/she should be confident in presentation with parties both small and large.
-As leader of a group, the candidate must be committed to its members and foster a teamwork approach. This will partially be accomplished through the facilitation of a positive work environment. He/she should be skilled in motivating and coaching others as well as interacting well in a team.
