皆さん、こんにちは。寒い日が続きますね。

さて最近変化の目覚しいボストンのMBTAですがあの新しく導入されたチケットの
「チャーリー」とは誰かご存知ですか？

Charlieは実は1950年代に今のMBTA（T)がMetropolitan Transit Authority
(MTA)だったころ流行ったThe Kingston Trio というフォークバンドの歌に出てくる
男の人のことです。これがあまりにヒットして全米中で知られたため今回新しく導入した
電子カードを「チャーリーチケット」と名付けたそうですが、この歌は実はMTAに抗議する
ために作られたことを考えるとなかなか興味深いものがあります。

その頃MTAは値上げを試みて「exit fares」を導入しました。つまり入場する時と出る時
両方で払わなければいけなかったわけです。（今この名残はBraintreeのみに残っています。）
これは乗客にとって面倒だし、お金はかかるし、それで政治的に対抗するため「exit fares」
がなくてボストンの地下鉄から永遠に出られないチャーリーの歌ができたわけです。(歌の名前は [M.T.A])

面白いのが奥さんが彼にthe Scully Square Station（今のdowntown crossing)で
毎日サンドイッチを渡すのですがなぜかexit faresを渡さないということです。

それにしても知名度が高いとはいえこれほどpoliticalな目的で作られた歌の「チャーリー」
をカードの名前に採用したのは驚きです。

さてお待ちかねの研究者紹介です。

今回はMassachusetts General Hospital(MGH)の浅井章博さんです。

MGHの麻酔科でポスドクをしている、浅井章博です。。麻酔科所属とはいっても、
専門は小児科で、筋ジストロフィーという遺伝病の研究をしています。男の子だけが
かかる筋肉の病気で、うまれてしばらくは正常に発育しますが、5，6歳になってから
徐々に全身の筋肉が壊れていき、車椅子生活をしなければならなくなります。原因は
DNAの欠損だと分かっているのですが、それがなぜ発達過程では影響が少なくて、
発育するにしたがって病気が重くなっていくのかはまだわかっていません。したがって、
効果的な治療方法も確立されていません。すこしでもそのなぞを解き明かすことができる
ようにと、研究を始めてもう4年目。ますます謎は深まるばかりですが、多くの研究仲間に
支えられて何とかボストンで生き残っています。

nation's history.The people of Boston have rallied bravely whenever the right
of man have been threatened.
Today a new crisis has arisen. The Metropolotan Transit Authority,
better known as the M.T.A.is attempting to levy a burdensome tax on
the population in the form of a subway fare increase.Citizens, hear me
out. This could happen to you.

Let me tell you the story
Of a man named Charlie
On a tragic and fateful day
He put ten cents in his pocket,
Kissed his wife and family
Went to ride on the MTA

Charlie handed in his dime
At the Kendall Square Station
And he changed for Jamaica Plain
When he got there the conductor told him,
"One more nickel."
Charlie could not get off that train.
