【Mini biography】
外交官の家に生まれる。子供時代は世界各地で生活した経験あり。ベイルートやレバノン、アテネなど。そのためギリシア語が堪能。アテネでの学生時代にラジオのトークショウのホストとして"School Daze With Greg Kinnear." を持っていた。米国帰国後はアリゾナ大でジャーナリズム専攻。卒業後、LAに移り、マーケティングアシスタントの職を得る。次にMTVのVJになるのは失敗したが、テレビでのホストやレポーターとなった。そのころ"L.A. Law" (1986) and "Life Goes On" にも端役で出演。製作&プロデュースの"Best of the Worst" (1991)、彼が有名になった"Talk Soup" (1991-94) 、NBC の深夜のトークショウ "Later with Greg Kinnear" (1994)などTVに次々に出演。1994年には初の映画での大役を『Blankman』で、95年にはビリー・ワイルダー『Sabrina』のリメイク作に。96年には主役を『Dear God』で。97年には『As Good as It Gets（恋愛小説家）』の演技によりオスカーの助演男優賞にノミネートされた。また、ヒットした『You've Got Mail (1998) 』ではメグ・ライアンの恋人役を演じた。
