米カリフォルニア大学サンフランシスコ校(UCSF)に所属し、非営利研究所である予防医学研究所Preventive Medicine Research Institute(PMRI、カリフォルニア州Sausalito)の創設者でもあるDean Ornish博士らによる今回の研究では、低リスク前立腺癌の男性30人で大幅に生活習慣を改善。改善の内容は、食事中の脂肪分のカロリーを10%に抑える、精製糖を控える、健康的な食材、野菜、果物を豊富に摂るなどのほか、ビタミン類および魚油の補充、適度な有酸素運動、ストレス管理、リラクゼーション、呼吸法の訓練を実施した。研究開始時および3カ月後にテロメラーゼ値を評価した結果、テロメラーゼ値が29%増大したほか、悪玉(LDL)コレステロールの減少が認められた。
発表した米コロラド(Colorado)州ボルダー(Boulder)にある米国国立大気研究センター(National Center for Atmospheric Research、NCAR)のチームによると、今回の発見によって植物の生態や大気に及ぼす影響などに関する新たな研究が加速し、また農業関係者が作物の不作を早い段階で予測するのに役立つ可能性もあるという。
