Dear Friends and Supporters of Rainbow Valley Farm
It’s a while since we’ve been in touch so this letter is to bring you the latest happenings.
A lot has happened in the last 6 months. Joe went to Europe in May on a 3 month lecture tour of Austria and Italy. His lectures were very well received – he taught in diverse locations including nearly 2 weeks at the University of Vienna and appeared on prime time television in Italy talking about permaculture and sustainability. On arriving home he went into hospital for a hip replacement operation and he is recovering well.
Trish stayed home to look after the farm with the wonderful interns, and managed to survive the cyclone in July, albeit with a lot of damage and many trees down.
New Court Case – Future of RVF again in Question
We regret to have to tell you that activities on Rainbow Valley Farm are again being challenged in the form of Declaration Proceedings to the Environment Court. The declarations sought challenge Joe & Trish’s Resource Consent to conduct education on the farm as well as some of the farm’s legally established accommodation. If successful, the declarations would substantially restrict the educational activities undertaken on the farm.
“We were unaware that a Resource Consent granted 10 years ago could be challenged” says Joe. “It would be sad if our educational programmes on the farm on permaculture and sustainable living were curtailed.”
Rainbow Valley Farm and the Council are defending the case which is expected to be heard by the Environment Court in the early part of 2008.
This once again puts the farm’s future in question. Legal and planning bills are already mounting up and the Society will soon begin fundraising to assist. We will let you know how you can help.
In the meantime we invite you to renew your membership of the Society – we need your support. Please find a renewal form at the bottom of the last page (unless you have renewed or joined recently)
Joe Polaischer has had a stroke and had a brain tumour removed last
night and is still recovering in intensive care in Auckland. Please
carry these guys in your thoughts and send them support and healing energy.
