The Japan Restaurant Week Committee (co-promoter: Gourmet Navigator, Inc.) will hold “Japan Restaurant Week 2011”, the second Restaurant Week in Japan, from January 21st (Fri.) to February 12th (Sat.), 2011. This time, the event will be held in the Tokyo suburban area as well as in Kansai. Restaurant Week is a major food-related event with a history of about 20 years in New York. Held twice a year (in summer and winter), special menus can be enjoyed at reasonable prices in around 300 participating restaurants, making this a particularly popular period for tourists from abroad. In Japan, the event was started in earnest this summer, the aim being to stimulate the restaurant industry and promote Japan’s unique food culture. The first effort, “Japan Restaurant Week 2010 – Tokyo Premium”, was held in five areas – Tokyo hotspots Aoyama, Roppongi, Marunouchi and Ginza, plus Yokohama – with special sponsorship from the Diners’ Club (Citi Cards Japan, Inc.) and backing from the Tourism Agency, among others. A total of 81 luxury restaurants took part, including some that have earnt Michelin stars. The event was a success, with satisfied diners commenting “I tried five restaurants for the first time during Restaurant Week” and “It was an opportunity to visit restaurants I’d always wanted to check out.” In future, we aim to establish Restaurant Week as a twice-yearly event, thereby promoting inbound and domestic tourism while fanfaring the attractions of Japan’s culinary culture to the rest of the world.
