Is there any point in fighting to stave off industrial apocalypse?
The collapse of civilisation will bring us a saner world, says Paul Kingsnorth. No, counters George Monbiot – we can't let billions perish

Seven or eight years ago, I finally realized that our collective problem could not be "solved" because our collective problem is inherent in human nature. However, I still had the time – and still like to study/discuss/debate – so switched from "solve" to "mitigate."

After studying a key topic called "legal realism" over the last few months, I have come to believe that a method DOES EXIST to mitigate the energy cliff in America. Moreover, a profound political change in America may make life better for people in other countries too! Here is what I have so far:

Key oil figures were distorted by US pressure, says whistleblower http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/nov/09/peak-oil-international-energy-agency

A second senior IEA source, who has now left but was also unwilling to give his name, said a key rule at the organisation was that it was "imperative not to anger the Americans" but the fact was that there was not as much oil in the world as had been admitted. "We have [already] entered the 'peak oil' zone. I think that the situation is really bad," he added.
