Fortune Magazine, April 1944. Over 300 pages. The entire issue is devoted to "A MILITARY POWER WE MUST DEFEAT, A PACIFIC PROBLEM WE MUST SOLVE.
Not only is the issue interesting because of the in-depth coverage of all-things Japanese, it has the requisite number of amusing/absurd 1940's advertisements. Asbestos is GREAT and certain cigarettes really SATISFY.
The Table of Contents reads:
■"THE JOB BEFORE US. . .is to understand the nature of the enemy so that we may destroy, and remake, the nature of his ambition.
■"THE WAY OF THE GODS. Behind Japan's explosion in the Pacific lie paradoxes of behavior that have twisted the Japanese mind for centuries. (NB. I didn't say the magazine is "politically correct".)
■"WHO RUNS THE EMPEROR? The people do no run him and he does not run himself. But the use of his name is the pay-off in Army-business power politics.
■"THE LOOK OF JAPAN A portfolio of fourteen photographs of peacetime Japan.
■"JAPAN'S ROAD TO WAR A check list of recent Japanese political and military history.
■"THE CITIZEN-SUBJECT The Japanese civilian is tough and patient. He always has worked hard and eaten little. Now he works harder and eats less.
■"THE FARMER His needs are subdued to the capacity of his narrow fields.
■"THE CONTROL OF H. FUJINO He is quite sure he makes up his mind for himself. His shrewd government is delighted to have him think so.
■"THE GEOGRAPHY OF CONQUEST With maps of Japan's topography, Japans occupied territory.
■"LITTLE INDUSTRY, BIG WAR To grow strong enough to win, Japan's industry needs the new empire. But Japan can't have her war and her empire too.
■"THE ARMY HAD ITS DAY But it was too Western in China, and too Oriental in the Pacific. Its last hope is that we may not try to defeat it completely.
■"THE JAPANESE ARMY Facts and Figures on its manpower and materiel.
■"ASIA FOR THE JAPANESE Little Nipponese carpetbaggers overrun conquered lands. Many are stupid and brutal, but they make things hot for our side.
■"WHEN THE JAP CAME TO MANILA A firsthand account of what happened after January 2, 1942.
■"WHAT TO DO WITH JAPAN? Defeat, disarm, occupy her. Then give the Japanese people the opportunity to evolve a society with which we can deal.
■"ISSEI, NISEI, KIBEI The U.S. has put 110,000 people of Japanese blood, two-thirds of them citizens, into "protective custody".
■"HOW MANY JAPANESE? In 1940 there were 73,114,000; how many will there be in 1970?
■"WHAT THEY LEFT BEHIND THEM Japanese property in the U.S. included military secrets.
■"U.S. KNOWLEDGE ABOUT JAPAN The Fortune Survey reveals it to be shockingly small."
