PANTALEIMON (pan-ta-lay-mon) is the pseudonym of one Andria Degens (dee-jens). The use of the name Pantaleimon was inspired by a character in a children’s book. Andria Degens was born in Surrey, England and has Dutch and Irish blood flowing through her veins. She spent most of her childhood roaming around the countryside of Somerset and Devon. Her father was a navigational engineer, so her family moved frequently. Her mother was and still is an inspiration. Andria lived a hobo-like existence during most of her twenties in South East Asia and then lived for a period in Thailand. She presently enjoys some stability residing in a small English coastal town.
Pantaleimon creates simple, haunting and beautiful music, somewhere between meditative and psychedelic. The first album, ‘Trees Hold Time’, was released in 1999 and was directly inspired during her years spent travelling. Her second album, ‘Mercy Oceans’, was released late in 2007. Andria says “after ‘Trees Hold Time’ I felt I had nothing else to give to the world musically”. Then in 2005 she was suddenly inspired to create the music that eventually became ‘Cloudburst’ and ‘Mercy Oceans’.
Andria has appeared with the band Wire (live at the Clapham Grand, 1992), and on Dirty Three’s ‘Horse Stories’ album. She has contributed to projects by Current 93 (‘Black Ships Ate The Sky’), Susan Stenger’s (Band of Susans) ‘Soundtrack For An Exhibition’, Irr. App. (Ext.), Nurse With Wound and Marc Pilley’s Hobotalk. Pantaleimon have also contributed music to Cam Archer’s film ‘Wild Tigers I Have Known’.
