"HOWDY DOODY FUNKY EARTHLINGS AND FELLOW ALIENS!
AMALIA OF SEKOYA & 1LUV HERE!!!
WHO??? amalia, yeh that's me, THE ORAL FIXATOR, a singer, a writer, an air breather, a good food eater, an ENERGY CONNECTOR! A Filipina, Spanish Brit relocated to Vancouver in the early 90's. Been at this thing called MUSIC since I was in the womb. I got SINGIN' in the shower at 10 am this morn and haven't stopped. I woke up gleamin' to go write and record. Finally made my way out at 1, hopped on the bus, my headphones whisperin' a little "Sweet Justice" got overwhelmed by Jill Scott's words and started getting all girly excited teary eyed. Everything was so serene, then I got listenin' to Stevie "TOO HIGH... she sees a 4-eyed cartoon monster on the tv screen," and SHAKIN' IT UP on the BUS, I couldn't help myself, I was OUT OF CONTROL, or shall I say, IN CONTROL. This is a regular day for me. Let me know what you think of the muse I'm makin' with my compadres?
Peace, love and chocolate bars"

SEKOYA : 2005 JUNO NOMINATED 'BEST CONTEMPORARY JAZZ GROUP' IN CANADA
2005 WINNER OF CMW'S INDIES 'FAVOURITE ELECTRONIC GROUP'
2 TIME 2004 CANADIAN URBAN MUSIC AWARD NOMINEES
THE WORLD OF SEKOYA... Debut album launched June 2004 on Maximum Jazz/Universal. Sekoya's complex compositional form, jazz influenced syncopated beats, sophisticated electronic sound manipulation, eclectic vocal styling, socially and politically charged lyrics and intelligent horn arrangements are all in a genre defying singer/songwriter style. James Graham of New Music Canada, CBC, calls Sekoya an "Introduction to Soul in Motion".
The past 3 years have been monumental for Sekoya...
Canada Council awarded them with a grant to fully fund their debut album featuring critically acclaimed jazz musicians Greg Hutchinson & Reuben Rogers from the Grammy award winning Joshua Redman Quartet as well as Canada's very own Brad Turner of multi-Juno award winning electric jazz band, Metalwood.
Garnering rave reviews from Miami to London. Their debut single to the world on Nutone's jazz beat compilation 'Sunset Nights' had them sharing the same scorching spotlight with many electronic visionaries from all over the globe, such as LTJ Bukem, Llorca, Koop and Soulstice.
Sekoya have been blessed to share the same stage as UK's Cinematic Orchestra, Norway's Beady Belle & Jaga Jazzist, Cuba's Maraca, USA's Michael Franti of Spearhead, Canada's Kid Koala, and Internationally acclaimed spoken word artists Ursula Rucker and Saul Williams.
Here lies the evidence of just how defiantly they break the rules. With ease they relate to diverse audiences, crossing over from jazz to electronic music, from urban to world.
