ニューヨーク生まれ
ワーナーのメイクアップの父の元に生まれる。
俳優、セット・デザイナーとして映画業界に入るが、朝鮮戦争にカメラマンとして参加した事をきっかけに撮影の道に入る。
その後、ＣＦ写真とドキュメンタリー映画を撮りながら、独学で撮影技術を学ぶ。
