OKUSTAN
I started making my own original jewelry simply because I hate the idea of mass-production items and putting something on which is the same as others.
I like expressing my individuality, it reflects my fashion sense: I am the only one Natsuko Hayashi in the whole world so I make a statement with my choice of jewelry and clothes. I am not good at expressing my own feelings into words but my hands can express what I like, how I feel, see, hear and think.
It started with my friends, they were impressed with my jewelry and wanted to have it for themselves, the word of mouth spread gradually and fashion designer named Kosuke Tsumura from the Issey Miyake Group appointed me as a collaborate jewelry designer in his 1998 spring/summer collection. After that my jewelry became popular within the artists, they wore it when they performed, when posing for posters, magazines and so on. In 2002 another Japanese fashion designer named Masaki Matsushima appointed me as his jewelry designer for his Autumn/Winter Collection.
I get inspiration from anatomy, nerves, cells, blood vessels, stalks and branches of trees and plants, the moon and earth. For me they all have roots and originally are close to Mother Earth. Nature gives me emotive power, I feel it is alive and I am putting a life into my jewelry. Pieces of material become alive. So the designs look vivid or almost in motion. All my jewelry is made by hand so each has its own unique features. In 2004 I moved to NY.
