In the New Year holidays I watched the TV drama of Chushin-gura. The air time was about 10 hours, that is, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Of course Chushin-gura is a popular story for many Japanese people, but I was surprised about the long air time.
The drama was very interesting for me, because this story is always interesting, and the members of cast were wonderful. Chushin-gura is a story of revenge, and usually this story is told from the point of view of Samurai.
In this TV drama the wife controlled progress of the revenge. I think this view is interesting, even if it's not true. Anyway I think the role of the wife was considerable.
Everybody knows the wife's husband, who was a lord of Akou area near Kobe City, had a dangerous action in Edo castle about 300 years ago. He was killed by hara-kiri, but in fact he was insulted by a bad officer.
Her husband, Asano, is a tragic hero, and Kira, the officer, is a villain even now for many Japanese people. All are historical facts. But the truth is in the darkness.
Why have many Japanese people liked this old story during 300 years? I think the key word is a loyalty.
