VIRGINIA BEACH―
This open space on the corner of Holland Road and Warwick Drive in the Scarborough Square neighborhood in Virginia Beach may not look like much. But in a couple of months, it will house the first ever Asia Town in Virginia.
"We're looking for something authentic and unusual that you cannot find in Hampton Roads, says Kathy Owens, a developer.
Unlike other Chinatowns in other states, this Asia Town will feature restaurants, shops, and businesses from different Asian countries like the Philippines, Japan, and India.
Developer Kathy Owens says they're working on bringing a gourmet grocery store, a Korean karaoke lounge, as well as an Asian sports bar.
Fred Aldridge, who lives right next to the proposed site, says he supports growth in his neighborhood, regardless of what kind.
"If that's what we got up there, who cares what it is. You know – red, yellow, black, white - it doesn't make any difference as long as their good and do good business as they should," says Fred.
But in keeping with the authentic theme, Kathy says they don't want to move in existing Asian businesses in Hampton Roads into the complex.
Luc Deesee, who manages Thai Pan restaurant in the Green Run section of the city, isn't worried about the competition. She thinks customers may try the new restaurants, but will remain devoted to their favorite businesses.
"If you're good, don't worry about anything," she says.
As far as the timeline for this project, the developer plans to break ground in the next couple of months. The grand opening for Asia Town is scheduled for next summer.
