Every month we get a boatload of new subscribers to our newsletter. Some of these people are old-hands who have finally signed up after years of intending to, but most of them are new to Utilikilts and to the whole unbifurcated lifestyle.
When joining any new community, learning the terminology (like "unbifurcated") can be a big stumbling block. Long-established members of the community will have acronyms, shorthand, buzzwords and catch-phrases that don't exist outside the community, or have specific meanings within the group. So I'm going to take some time this month to bring you up to speed with the terms and buzzwords you will encounter as new members of the Utiliclan. (Hey...there's one of those buzzwords now!)
* UK - shorthand for "Utilikilts", not those bits of land north of France * Utilikiltarian - someone who wears a Utilikilt * Utiliclan - the world-wide brotherhood of Utilikiltarians. (Check the tag sewn into the back of your kilt. It says: "Welcome to Utiliclan!") * UKotM - The Utilikiltarian of the Month, profiled in this here Newsletter. * Scratch & Dent List - These are kilts that we can't charge full price for. They are used, mis-manufactured, damaged... whatever. Sold as is, there are some great deals. (Updated several times a month, so check it weekly!) * MUG - Men's Unbifurcated Garment. Pants are bifurcated. Kilts, sarongs, etc are not. Get it? * Utility kilts - the market that was created by the Utilikilt. Kilts for everyday wear. * Symmetrical Pleating System - The way the pleats are organized on a Utilikilt. Patent-protected, this design this has the pleats on the left folding back to the left, and the pleats on the right folding to the right. They meet at the center back in a single box-pleat. (This has a lot of practical advantages over traditional pleating, which pleats the kilt in the same direction all the way around.) * "Business With A Conscience" - ...is what Utilikilts strives to be. We like to think of the environmental and sociological implications of our manufacturing processes and general business practices. At home, you don't throw your garbage into your neighbors yard because you - as a human being - have a conscience. We strive to make sure our business has a good conscience as well. * Steven Villegas - The inventor of the Utilikilt, and the sole owner of the Utilikilts Company LLC. No, he's not Scottish, he's half Mexican and completely possessed by demons!
So there you have it... a basic introduction to Utilikilts terminology.
When I talk to people about my kilts, I tell them "you will never meet a stranger in a Utilikilt", and that has been proven to me all over the world. I have had great conversations with other Utilikiltarians in DeGaulle Airport in Paris, San Francisco International Airport, on the street all up and down the west coast of the USA, and innumerable other places. Every one of the people I have met in a Utilikilt has immediately been a friend, and a cool person as well!
The Utiliclan is the best kind of club: no dues, no formal meetings, and a comfortable dress code! Watch what happens next time you are walking through the airport in your Utilikilt and you see another guy in a Utilikilt... no matter what the language barrier, you are going to have a great conversation!
Safety Tip: When dodging rubber bullets at the protest, be sure to hold your kilt down, as you would in a strong wind. Safety Tip: When dancing drunk at your wife's company picnic, resist the urge to lift your kilt above your chest. Safety Tip: When the Airport Security man at JFK International pats you down, refrain from mentioning your many "secret pockets". Safety Tip: Puffy-sleeved shirts are not recommended with any Utilikilt, and could lead to other fashion accidents. Safety Tip: "Acid Washed" does not refer to real acid. Safety Tip: Leaf-blower duels while wearing your Utilikilt and your "SUBMIT" t-shirt in front of the Michigan Womyns Festival are not encouraged. Safety Tip: Reenacting "The Life and Death of a Fish is the Super Bass-O-Matic 2000" at the Farm and Home Show in Kansas City, will not only ruin your kilt, but may also induce motion sickness. Safety Tip: Breeding rattlesnakes is a Bad Idea, regardless of attire.
