2007 FEDERAL ELECTION - GLBTI DEMANDS & PARTY RESPONSES
In October 2007 the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (VGLRL) wrote to the leaders of all political parties contesting the 2007 federal election seeking commitment to end discrimination in all its forms.
The aim of the compilation of these responses is to assist the VGLRL membership and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) communities of Victoria to be informed about the party's position on GLBTIQ issues.
The letter listed a range of demands to political party leaders, including:
A commitment to implement the recommendations from HREOC's recent Same Sex Same Entitlements report; Enactment of national sexual orientation and gender identity anti-discrimination legislation; Non-discriminatory marriage and civil union reforms; Establishment of a GLBTI advisory committee to advise government on GBLTI issues; A foreign policy commitment to end gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination in all its forms; Better funding of the National HIV/AIDS strategy; A commitment to consult on a national charter of human rights and responsibilities; and Support for the "Brazilian resolution" at the United Nations on human rights and sexual orientation. A federal government that addresses these issues will be truly inclusive and recognise non-discrimination as a core value. The VGLRL believes that only a party that meets these demands can be worthy of our community's trust.
The VGLRL thanks the Liberal Party, the Australian Labor Party, Socialist Alliance, the Democrats and the Greens for their responses.

The Australian Gay lesbian bisexual transgender intersex and queer Multicultural Council (AGMC Inc.) is proud to announce that Sunday November 25 2007 will see the hottest GLBTIQ Multicultural event of the year. United We Dance will come alive in its 6th year of fundraising fun, dance and entertainment.
United We Dance was born six years ago as a result of obvious cultural and religious problems in the world. We as a GLBTIQ multicultural community wanted to set an example and show that we could live in harmony (and party together of course!) And this year we will party to the global sounds of DJ Shen-Jyt.
At the same time it was decided that all funds raised on the night would be directed back into our community. Such recipients in the past have been Bent TV, JOY Melbourne, Positive Attitude, the David Williams Fund and the Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council Inc.
This year the half the proceeds will be held in trust by the AGMC to assist individual multicultural groups and the other half will be handed over to the Asia Pacific Outgames which is to be held in Melbourne in Jan/Feb 2008.
The night is fully organised by volunteers and all performers on the night donate their time. The venue will be The Market in South Yarra who have been very supportive of the work of United We Dance.
Finger food will be served and a huge cast of performers representing all corners of the globe will be on stage throughout the night. The $10.00 admission even gets you a drink on arrival and there will be door prizes as well.
This is a night not to be missed. The crowds come back year after year for a taste of multicultural dance grooves as well as supporting some very worthy causes.
United We Dance Sunday 25 November 2007 6.30 till late $10.00 (Tickets only at the door) The Market 143 Commercial Rd South Yarra For more information please email info@unitedwedance.org.au
___________________________________________________________________________ MAKE OXFORT STREET SAFER PETITION
I am writing to you as a member of the community, and also as the Executive Producer of GLBTIQ Webzine, GenerationQ. I'm sure you have heard about the recent spate of violence and discrimination that has plagued Sydney's Oxford St the past few months. This situation is worsening, and carrying a ripple effect of dropped patronage and fear for individual safety. As a traditional queer safe space 'we' fought so hard to obtain, I feel it's imperative that we make a stand. Not just because it's always been 'ours', more because our right to feel safe and free is being violated and we will not bow to the movement trying to control us. Next it will be Commercial Rd or somewhere similar, so we can't pretend this doesn't affect all of us.
It is because of this, that GenQ has created the Street Angels, an initiative to cease violence in the area and increase community safety. This initiative has been and continues to be an overwhelming success. In conjunction with the GenQ Street Angels, we have created a petition to gain community support and voice for the challenges to come.
I was wondering if possibly we could work together to get the word out into the community and help get the signature numbers up. We are aiming for a figure into the 1,000s, but we need help from organizations such as yours and word of mouth to achieve that goal. Hopefully we can work together, and produce great things.
