Heard about Assembly Now about a week ago and was pretty psyched to hear their take on this whole amorphous post-punk, dance-rock, whatever-whatever style that all the kids have been breaking it down to over the past few years. Another band that can be described as "angular?" Yes, please! Assembly Now do capitalize on the trendy guitar driven dance punk that Britain has been churning out, but they don't come off as derivative or as insincere. Far from it. Perhaps I'm such a sucker for this sound because it absolutely has to have energy and passion to work, or perhaps I just like to shake it like a polaroid picture to a bass line that wishes it was a guitar line. In either case, these two songs (from Assembly Now's three-song demo) succeed. The bass is mixed high and, especially on Leigh-On-Sea, really acts as a driving force. If the rhythm section nearly steals the show on Leigh-On-Sea, the vocals steal it right back on Out on 24s, one of the most engagingly crafted vocal hooks this side of the Futureheads. These songs have a way of worming into your head and refusing to get out. Put 'em on and blast the speakers this Friday afternoon: it's almost spring!
