Therapy Goal 1. Increasing standing tolerance AAT Method a) stand at table to brush/pet dog b) stand to throw ball Gradation i) set daily/weekly goal for patient to reach in collaborating with patient
Therapy Goal 2. Improve standing balance AAT Method a) stand to throw ball to basket b) stand to play tug of war with dog Gradation i) increase distance to throw ball
Therapy Goal 3. Improve head control/head righting AAT Method a) have patient attempt to hold head b) have patient look on command to various parts of dog c) have patient watch hand as they stroke dog form head to tail d) place patient in prone on elbows with dog in front while having patient hold head up to watch dog e) encourage patient to maintain head control while weight bearing form side to side while petting/brushing dog on edge of mat Gradation i) have dog stand up to increase neck extension
Therapy Goal 4. Improve ability to weight shift on weak/injured LE AAT Method a) position dog to weak/injured side and have pt. reach to brush/pet b) stand throw ball Gradation i) angle patient to throw across weaker lower extremity while standing
Therapy Goal 5. Improve trunk balance AAT Method a) have patient sit away from back of chair while petting/brushing dog on table b) place patient sitting on edge of wheelchair/mat with dog standing in front of patient with dog/s head on left or right while having patient cross c) place patient on edge of wheelchair/mat with dog’s body between patient reach out to pet/brush dog getting weight bearing through lower extremity and trunk flexion; patient can do AAROM as well d) place patient in tailor sitting (Indian style) with dog in front or on either side of patient while petting/brushing dog e) place patient in quadruped with dog lying in front and have patient shift weight to pet/brush dog f) place patient in tall kneeling or half keeling and have patient reach to pet do while on mat Gradation i) move dog further away from patient to increase trunk flexion
Therapy Goal 6. Increase trunk rotation AAT Method a) position dog to side of patient so that patient has to rotate trunk to brush/pet dog b) have patient brush/pet dog from head to tail Gradation i) increase distance of dog from patient ii) increase size of dog for increased rotation
Therapy Goal 7. Improve postural alignment AAT Method a) have patient sit on edge of wheelchair/mat without touching back
Therapy Goal 8. Improve ambulation AAT Method a) have patient walk dog on leash
Therapy Goal 9. Increase trunk flexion AAT Method a) sit on raised mat with dog on floor having patient lean forward to brush/pet dog c) place dog away from patient on table d) seat patient on mat with dog standing perpendicular to patient with head away; have patient lean forward to stroke/brush dog from head to tail Gradation i) increase distance of dog from patient
