Dear Friends,

You are invited to joint the Sherman Heights Historic District 13th Annual Dia de los Muertos celebration. In Mexico we decorate the graveyard. In Sherman Heights we decorate the neighborhood. Be part of this moving, authentic, noncommercial event. People of ALL ethnic backgrounds are encourage to participate. No experience is necessary.

Sherman Heights is located just east of downtown and the East Village, just south of Golden Hill, just north of Logan Heights, and just west of Grant Hill. (If you are a Sherman Heights homeowner who would like to offer your fenced front lawn for an altar, please contact me. If you own a business and want to sponsor an ad to support the printing costs of the free event program, we would love your sponsorship.)

Local families will create beautiful traditional Mexican altars inside the Sherman Heights Community Center at 2258 Island Avenue, between 22nd and 24th Streets, San Diego (there is no 23rd Street in Sherman Heights). Outside, in front of the lovely historic buildings, the Sherman Heights Neighborhood Cultural Council (SHNCC) invites everyone to honor a person or cause that is important to them by creating an outdoor altar that does NOT have to be traditional. Use your creativity and imagination. Your altar can be as large or small as you want it to be.

There is no cost to participate. Artists must supply all their own materials. Organizations and groups are encouraged to get involved.
The SHNCC will match artists with historic homes with fenced in front yards.

Artists get a free business card-size ad in the large event program, to be used for an actual business card or to be used as a memorial to those they are honoring. Artists must provide a paragraph of information about their altar for the program.

Attached is additional information. If you have any questions, send an e-mail to shermanheights@aol.com or call 619-233-8833. Please reserve your spot no later than October 20 (information about your altar is due by October 22).

The SHNCC believes that sharing culture is preserving culture. Please share this information with anyone who may be interested. Even if you don't create an altar, join us on the weekend of November 3 and 4 from 11:00 to 5:00 to see some amazing works of love and respect.
