US President Joe Biden is speaking outside the White House following
the Independence Day parade shooting.
He says the Fourth of July itself comes at a critical moment, when there can be
"reason to think this country is moving backwards".
"I know it can be exhausting and unsettling, but we're going to get through
all of this," Biden adds
US Congress passed a gun control bill - the most significant firearms legislation
in nearly 30 years - in June.
In light of today's mass shooting, the US president says: "There's nothing
guaranteed about our democracy, nothing guaranteed by our way of life."
But, in an optimistic tone, he adds a "call for America to move forward boldly and
unafraid".
