--------------------- Employment Requirements Old Regulations – Students on OPT were not required to be employed. They could be seeking employment the entire 12-month OPT period with no negative consequences. It was not required to report employer information to their school. New Regulations – Students are now limited to 90 days of unemployment during the entire period of OPT authorization. Students must inform their school of the name and address of their employer, and must update this information any time there is a change of employer or a period of unemployment. How this could affect you - While you are on OPT, if you have periods of unemployment that add up to more than 90 days, you could be in violation of your F-1 status. You are required to notify the ISC when you begin, end or change employment. Failure to keep the ISC updated on the name and address of your employer could also result in a violation of your F-1 status.
