Maryland/Elkton(born June 11, 1939)。高校卒業後にNYへ移り、Session Drummerとして活動を始める。King Curtisの(KINGPINS)のDrummerを務めて名を上げ、1970年からはAretha FranklinのBand Leaderを務めた。その後Blues/Pops/Funk/Soul/R&B/Rock/Jazz/Fusionと幅広いGenreで活躍、Steely Dan/James Brown/Aretha Franklinなど挙げたらきりが無いほどRecording/Live Sessionに参加した!人はその演奏Style(Drumming Style)を[Funky/Groove/Groovy/Fatback/Tight/Drive]等の言葉で表現している。彼は、James Brownの曲(Ain't That A Groove/Kansas City)でもPlayしている。Groove感あふれる16Beat/独特のTime感を持つShuffleが特徴で(Purdie Shuffle)と呼ばれ、Ghost Noteが常に鳴っている独特のShuffleで多くのDrummerに影響を与えている。このDrummingに影響された、Led Zepellinの(John Bonham-故人)は(Fool in the Rain)で(Purdie Shuffle)を叩いている。Bernard Purdieは、Steely DanのAlbum[Aja]の(Home at Last)という曲で、この(Purdie Shuffle)を叩き、(Home at Last)のBernard PurdieのDrummingが基になってJeff Porcaro(*1992年、自宅の庭で殺虫剤を散布中にアレルギーで心臓発作を起こし38歳で急死!/Porcaroにとって、Bernard PurdieのDrumming/Grooveは、目指すべき目標だったようです!)はToToの(Rosanna)のDrum Pattern/Rhythm Patternが生まれた(*Rosanna Shuffle)1990年代以降は、1970年代のBlack Music/Jazz/Funkが再評価された中で"Respect"を受けるMusicianの一人となった。HIP HOPにおいては彼の叩いた曲はSamplingの元ネタとして多用された。Bernard Lee "Pretty" Purdie が1967年にReleaseしたFirst、Solo Album。強力なDrum Breaks(Soul Drums/Soul Bossa Nova/Funky Donkey)等を収録したSoul Jazzのの傑作/Purdieの作品でも最高と評される作品です。
