Mypace-chan received a call for an interview. She was so excited but nervous about the interview because this is her first formal interview. All the things she has practiced with me needed to be applied in an interview. Before Mypace-chan went to the interview, we practiced several times. She did not know what they would ask her, so we tried to come up as much sample questions as possible.

On the interview day, I was waiting for her phone call. I was so nervous how she did it. I wanted to give her a call but decided to wait until she called me. She finally sent me a text message saying "I just finished my interview. It seemed to go well. They will schedule me for a second interview next week. I'm not sure what to expect for the second interview..." I asked Mypace-chan to write me an email with the list of the interview questions that they asked her and the list of answers she gave to them. She immediately emailed me. Most of questions were on the target and were exactly the same questions that we practiced. However, there was one tricky question that Mypace-chan did not do well, which was a scenario question, "Have you ever dealt with a difficult customer at your volunteer job?". She replied, "I haven't. I saw my co-workers dealing with some difficult customers." Mypace-chan tried to answer honestly. However, that was not what the interviewer wanted to hear. What the interviewer wanted to see from Mypace-chan in an interview were: 1) how she is a good problem solver, 2) how she can think on her feet in a situation that she has never experienced, and 3) how she is flexible. Although ASD students are very honest and direct, most of them have difficulty with answering those tricky scenario questions. Some of interview questions require a job candidate to think through the inexperienced and uncomfortable situations and figure out how to solve the situations as they are real. Mypace-chan could answer the question like this, "I have never experienced with a difficult customer at the current job. However, if I ever experience in a such situation, I would do..........".

The scenario question requires a lot of mind "what if" process and analyze and decision making. More sample scenario questions ASD students can practice, they can better prepare for the interview. Also, understanding the expectation of the second interview is always helpful for ASD students.

Stay tuned for the upcoming interview!
