Syukatsu-kun is a 25 years old who recently graduated with a master's degree. He has been struggling with finding a job for so long. Although Syukatsu-kun has previously worked with the state government and several nonprofit agencies to receive an employment support, it has never been successful, and he has never worked. Syukatsu-kun has been desperate with finding something, even a small part-time job. With his motivation, he has often walked around the city and as soon as he saw "Help Wanted" sign, he grabbed the job application and submitted them. However, all his efforts have never paid off.

Syukatsu-kun is a very motivated and dedicated hard worker. He loves Japanese anime manga and even taught himself Japanese. He has a difficulty with expressing his thoughts orally, so many people have a difficulty understanding what he is trying to say. However, if he is given a time to talk with his pace, he has a lot to talk about. He often tries to communicate in Japanese with me. It absolutely amazes me that he knows a lot of Japanese vocabularies. His Japanese is not perfect, but he can have a decent conversation with Japanese speakers in my opinion.

Questions come to mind, "who can tolerate his challenges? and what type of job can be a match for his skill?"

Since none of the jobs Syukatsu-kun applied were successful and even never reached to a possible interview, Syukatsu-kun asked me help him find a part-time job. During our meetings, I learned so much about Shykatsu-kun and his skills. I also learned that although Syukatsu-kun told me he is open to any jobs, he has specific likes and dislikes. People may see him as a picky. However, since ASD students has a strong sensitivity, I carefully selected a type of job he wants to find. One of my ideas was something that Syukatsu-kun can use his Japanese language skill. When he speaks in Japanese, his eyes are bright and shining and so excited to try out his language skill. I asked Syukatsu-kun, "how about we can find something in Japan town?" He absolutely loved the idea. I searched around jobs in Japan town and found a job at one of Japanese stores who sells household stuff. Syukatsu-kun completed the job application and submitted it to the store. Bingo! Syukatsu-kun received a call from the store for an interview next.

Syukatsu-kun and I had a talk to prepare for the interview. Since this is a first time for Syukatsu-kun to have a formal interview, there were a lot of things that Syukatsu-kun was not familiar with the interview process. Especially ASD students have weakness in communication and socialization and being isolated from peers, many ASD students do not collect important information from their peers, so they rely on their parents and/or advisers. Syukatsu-kun first asked me, "What do I have to wear?" I replied, "Well, it is a formal interview, so you need to wear nice cloth. Do you have any black or dark color pants and a jacket? You can wear them with a nice white shirt." Syukatsu-kun said, "ok."

Another important thing for ASD students is that giving them as much specific detailed information as possible to help them eliminate uncertain situations. They may already be overwhelmed about an interview, during the interview with many uncertain questions can be extremely stressful for ASD students. It is important to practice and let ASD students know about the specific details, procedure, and expectations. For example, giving common example questions, good eye contact during the interview, nice smile, and a solid hand shaking, preparing a copy of his resume and a note and a pen can be very helpful tips for ASD students. When Syukatsu-kun was practicing interview questions with me, his answers were not very thoughtful. For example, I asked him, "Why do you want to work for our store?" He replied, "I just wanted to get a part-time job." It is a true statement, however he should not answer his honest opinion. I commented, "I think you can more emphasize about how much you like to work for the store and what aspect of the store makes you enjoy working there!" Syukatsu-kun changed the statement saying, "I like your store because I love talking with people in Japanese and enjoy being surrounding by both Japanese culture and language." Good answer! It also seemed Syukatsu-kun was having difficulty with answering positive ways to some questions. Syukatsu-kun was answering too honestly, but he needs to know it would not work at the job interview.

After we practicing several times, his answers were much better, and he understands about the expectations. One more tip that I gave him was to bring a note and a pen so that he can write some of questions after the interview is over. Thus, the questions can be his practice for his next interview.

Stay tune for the update!
