Today, Tennen-kun stopped by my office concerning about his English class. Despite my suggestion, he decided to take two classes for the summer. Since two weeks passed, he little realized how hard and crazy semester would be.
He said "I have very difficult time with English class.... What should I do?" His voice was carried the meaning with more like, "I want to drop the English class, but my mother will not be happy about it. What do you think I should do?" I asked him "Are you overwhelmed taking two classes?" He nodded. I asked him again, "Do you think it's better to drop the class?" He nodded but replied back, "But, I have to get a permission from my mom. Do YOU want to talk to my mom? (smile)" I explained him first it is not my decision about whether he continues taking the class or not nor my discussion with his mother. I encouraged him to speak up with his mother and tell her his true feeling about what's going on.
He also explained that he has a very difficulty with writing an essay about his own autobiography. Although he also has difficulties organizing his essay and writing clear sentences, he has the most difficulty with coming up ideas from scratch what he wants to write, which I often see ASD students are struggling with and need support with. ASD students are more comfortable executing projects with given based ingredients. Last night, his brother helped him his essay for all day long until midnight. His brother was so frustrated about Tennen-kun's speed of process and often pressured him to process faster. As more his brother frustrated and pressured Tennen-kun, Tennen-kun gets overwhelmed and could not think through. The consequence is that it takes more time for him to finish his homework. It is not about Tennen-kun works hard or not but how Tennen-kun's brain works certain ways. Tennen-kun has many great ideas but has difficulty with organizing in his mind and expressing his thoughts and ideas in writing. As Tennen-kun learns techniques, he will be able to write more smoothly. Thus, after he finished his English homework, he was so exhausted and could not work on his other homework.
For the solution, he discussed with me about his time management and how he can effectively execute his assignment on time. One of techniques is to meet with his peer who is taking the same class. We schedule a plan to meet all of us together including Tennen-kun, his peer, and me to brainstorm ideas of the essay. After he brainstorms his ideas, he will meet with a content tutor to build his essay and how to write clear sentences. It's also important for him to manage his time and finishes his homework on time. We will be meeting weekly basis to work on his time management using time management techniques.
