Hi, Is there anyone who switched overseas driver's license to Japanese one ?
(They say it's not necessarily easy. Is it true ?)

My husband (american) is going to take exam on 30th this month.
If there is anyone, please give me a tip for writing test .( I will have to assist him on translation.)

Thank you!

Hi! I didn't have a driving license from my country, so I took the whole lessons and test in Japan. I took the English written test at the testing centre in Oimachi. The questions are really hard, because they are very strange English indeed. Sometimes grammatically, these questions are true, but their intended meaning makes them false. The difficulty of the questions depends on the prefecture. Tokyo and Kanagawa are both fairly ok, but Saitama is apparently very hard. Some examples of the questions that I had were:

1. A line of kindergarten children were walking parallel to the road ahead. You slowed down and took care not to obstruct and passed them.

2. When entering a bend on a motorcycle, you should not turn the handles but lean naturally to turn.

3. Correct timing for a U-turn signal is 3 seconds before you turn.

4. On a downgrade, you changed the gears down quickly and applied the handbrake because the brakes didn't work.

5. If the engine revolution doesn't decrease, you should change to N to stop power being conveyed to the engine and pull off the road into a safe place.

There are a lot of motorbike questions, even if your test is not a motorbike.

In my understanding, I think American citizens just take the short test of 10 questions? And not the full 90 questions. There is a website that has some practice questions, but I'm sorry, I can't remember the address..

Basically, the test will try to trick, so your husband will have to look closely at every single word.

Word of warning: "should" and "must" are treated as the same meaning in the test.

Will he take the English test? You have to help on translation?

Good luck!

Hi, thanks for the tips,ローラ.
In fact I didn't have to translate the questions for him.

Anyway my husband passed the practical test on his second try.
Alot of people fail on the first practical.
There was a girl
on her fourth attempt. It seems they fail on the L. Either they fall on a gutter or get on the curve because the road is very narrow.
In case you get on the curve, you can back up and try again. Then you will be okay. Don't just continue your way.

About the written test, consider the questions, false or true. (on the paper is yes or no)If the statement is true, circle YES.

Some tips from me are;

Treat the course as normal situation you will be in.
Move your FACE physically right and left or back to see if it's safe.
On the direct course which is rather long, you have to speed up to 50 km/h.

Good luck to those who take!
