Spring/Summer 2010
unseen Utopias

---
A well nurtured plant + makeshift chair + a new friend + some other unexpected discoveries that make space for new possibilities of living. Flicking through Michael Wolfs photographic exploration entitled Hong Kong: Front Door/ Back Door inside the Louis Vuitton store at Tsim Sha Tsui. An image depicts two street cleaners wearing homemade sun hats fashioned from straw and plastic bags. Improvisation and adaption produce new aesthetic, formal and functional possibilities. Wolf describes this city like a kind of plant, making a space for living wherever possible. Reflecting on this proposition while wandering through the LV store.

unseen utopias, reveals a similar methodology. ffiXXed collections like all ffiXXed activities, functions as a specific framework to explore the construction of lifestyle and subjectivity, using the concepts of form, function, and design within the everyday practice of living. The current collection draws from a range of recent ffiXXed activities and collaborations that have taken place across several geographic locations. Such as the Too Much of Everything Scarf, which uses imagery from the exhibition of the same name curated by ffiXXed at Y3K Gallery in Melbourne, Australia, a limited edition Multi Sleeve Rug in collaboration with Condiment, a publication exploring food, form and community, and a new adaption of the Shoppertop bag originally released as a BLESSadvanced product designed by ffiXXed. Their prêt a porter collection is complemented by these excursions along with a series of sculptural objects that disable all function in favor of a more fluid reconstruction of consumer activity.

The collection proposes a series of small gestures towards defining new ways of living within already existing forms. The garments, which are constructed from soft linens, light jerseys, fine cottons and printed mesh, reference classic modern forms with a clean, minimal edge. Subtle explorations and stylizations reveal functional and aesthetic surprises, such as the Upside Down Trouser Pant Top and the Multilayered Parallex Wrap that has the ability to take several different forms, and like many of the garments is not necessarily gender specific.

Surfaces merge together to form sleek lines and textures that investigate and determine additional purposes and applications for garments and collaborative applied-objects piecesGarments like the Desert Sun Hat and the printed Mosquito Net Hat Extension and Mesh Dress draw on practical outdoor wear designed to mediate our experience of nature. These pieces begin to question the shifting location and relationship we have with our natural environment.

Simple but elegant items such as the Bookhangers can be used not only as an alternative for storing or displaying books and other objects, but as a decorative accessory. Similarly, the floating patches offer a new way of displaying the logos and signs that we wish to promote, but unlike the more traditional method of sewing a patch to ones garment, these patches hang freely and are easily interchangeable. ffiXXed wish to promote the idea that organisms should adapt to all possibilities of evolution.
