If you haven't already hit the RSVP button and typed "Thanks, but no thanks," let me advise printing this invitation out, and saving it for reading on the train, or in the bath.

I. An invitation to participate in an NFTOS artshow
The next NFTOS art show could be at Revel Cafe on Auckland's legendary "K Road" as soon as December 2008. There's always the chance another show could pop up elsewhere (Chicago has been in the works for awhile), but today we booked a reservation for the whole month of December, no charge for the space, but the gallery would get 10% of any artwork sold.
I haven't measured the space yet, but think "cafe" rather than "gallery." I'm looking for 1-2 medium size works per artist, 3 or would be fine, if they are in a series or set that we can group together.
We need a theme and title, I'm open to suggestions, wide open!
We'll need a flyer design, and we might have a designer right here in NZ already, but we may as well make the process a competitive one, so why not see more than one design?
II. A check list of preparations
As has been usual for us, preparation will happen in the following order:
1. Choose venue (done) 2. Set dates (done) 3. Invite artists (done with this e-mail) 4. Choose theme and title (ready to hear your ideas!) 5. Select artists (priority goes to previous participants, locals, and those who got the e-mail) 6. Receive digital images of artwork submissions (for flyer and/or to motivate slower artists) 7. Create and circulate flyer (any volunteers for designing a flyer?) 8. Receive artwork in country (15 November is our target date--local artists will fill any vacant spots) 9. Hang artwork 10. Hold opening party!

V. Brainstorming a few ideas for a possible theme
As I wrote above, no title has been chosen yet, and the theme is wide open to suggestion.
Since this is our show in New Zealand, I would first like to point out some interesting points about NZ.
The capital, Wellington, is 9,240 km from Tokyo, 9,370 from Santiago, Chile, 10,750 from Beijing, 10,790 from Los Angeles, 11,725 from Vancouver, 11,785 from Johannesburg, 14,400 from New York and 18,810 from London, while the South Pole is a mere 5,340 km away!
NZ is a land of volcanoes and fjords. Looking up into the night sky one can see the Southern Cross rather than the Big Dipper. It is famous for the native flightless kiwi bird and for popularizing the non-native kiwi fruit. Favorite local coffee drinks are "flat whites" and "tall blacks." The national rugby team are the "All Blacks," while the lesser known soccer team are the "All Whites." (both references are to their uniforms rather than the players' race)
A popular name for the country is "Aotearoa," which roughly translates into "Land of the Long White Cloud." A popular symbol is the white fern. The weather is rainy then sunny then rainy then... (For you North Americans: Think Seattle, but not as cold in winter. Maybe more like San Francisco.)
Well, I could go on, but there's Google and Wikipedia...
Previous shows have been based on kind of abstract ideas. In the first show, we told participants to send us "News From The Other Side." Fans sent postcards to the show which we hung in the entrance.
The second and third shows had by far the easiest target. "Ji," a Japanese noun, was expressed by artwork containing writing of various languages, letters, words, Japanese characters, invented alphabets and the like.
The fourth and most recent show was a bit vague. "Nama," an adjective, could be translated a number of ways depending on its use as a root word or context--raw, fresh, unpasteurized, draught, live. Some artists nailed it, others... well, it was a fun show regardless.
Well, that's all for this installment of the next NFTOS Art Show!
