I wanted to talk a little about different ways of speaking in the US. Like Japan, the US has many different accents(方言).
For example, in my hometown of Boston, we say our words without a strong "r" sound.
So for most americans, they say words such as "garlic", or "car"
For Boston people. we say "gahhlic" or "cahh"
So it is easy to recognize people from the Eastern US, wherever they go ^_^
In the Southern US, there is also a strong way of speaking. For example, most Americans would say, "How are you doing today"
In the Southern US, they would say, "How Y'all doing today."
I think it is difficult for most Americans to understand, but slowly...we can begin to understand it if we stay there.
There are also different words. for those who live in the Western US. Here they say, "sack"(かばん)or "pop"(ソーダ) But everywhere else in the US, we say "bag" or "soda" If you ask for a "sack" in Boston, we will think you are asking for a 段袋....ヘヘ
For me, these things are very interesting!! Although I have lived in Oregon for 10 years, still people think I am a foreigner, because I can't talk like them...^_^
Welcome. ^_^
I am glad you have joined. Everyone here is very kind, so if you need any help, we all will help you any way we can.
I like to introduce new slang words(but I use nattou examples a lot..hehe) so I hope you can enjoy.
You know, I also went to University of Oregon!! ^_^
Still now, I am living here, and I really like this town. Very peaceful, and the people are very friendly.
Thank you and let's enjoy english together.
We are both foreigners in our own countries!! ^_^
It's too sad...hehehe
One of my customers once said to me, "You are not one
of 'us' ". I told her that I lived here for ten years, but she said if you are not born here, you cannot be an "Oregonian".
She is a crazy old lady though.....^_^
And if you come to Boston, I think it is good for your english. Because Boston people do not know how to say R's either. But for some reason, my speaking is not like Boston speaking. I think I don't have such an accent.
When I hear the word rucksack, I think of a
backpack (バックパック).
When I hear the word sack, I think of a sack of potatoes or grain. Not a bag to carry regular things. But in most of the US, "bag" is said the most.
I think people it is really just people's custom to speak like this. Because the US has so many different kinds of people living here, from all over the world, words are always changing. There is 方言 of course, but it is always changing I think. When I went to the Southern US, the speaking there was sooo interesting!! I really couldn't understand them at all...haha
