Hi everyone,

Here is some more slang for you. Are you ready?? ^_^
If you have some Japanese words or expressions you want to say in English, you can ask me too. Let's have fun!

1) Gold digger/逆玉

She married that rich old man because she is a gold digger.

2) Eat a horse! (this is a little old phrase, but I still like it ^_^)/ 腹減った

I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse!!

3) Messed up (this one is pretty popular) / 間違った(人か物かことか)

Did he burn a bowl of cereal? That's messed up!!

That crazy guy who talks to himself is messed up!

4) Right on! / その通り、そうでしょ!と言うこと。

Did you give your nattou to your dog? Right on!
When he said George Bush looks like a monkey, he was right on!

5) All skin and bones/ 痩せ衰える

That model in the magazine is all skin and bones!

6) That's tight(hip-hop slang) / すぅげいかっこう!
That new car stereo is tight!

7) Freak out/ 素っ頓狂

When I found nattou in my チャーハン, I totally freaked out.
Seeing that I have become so fat, really freaked me out.

8) Poser/ 成り済ます

He wears gangster clothes and talks tough, but really he lives with is mom and likes cartoons. He's such a poser.

9) When hell freezes over/ 何かすること全然やってない。

I will eat nattou, when hell freezes over.
She doesn't care about anyone but herself. The day she does something nice, is the day hell freezes over.

10) Drinking words/ 酔っぱらった言葉

There are sooo many. But here are some.^_^
He/She is sloshed, wasted, drunk, smashed, plastered,
4 sheets to the wind, tipsy, hammered, crawled into a bottle, loaded, soused, liquored up, likes a bit of the drink, trashed....
Americans like to drink I guess....hehe

Hi Kaori,

I'm sorry the drinking slang was difficult. I think they all just mean someone who is very drunk. They all have the same meaning. ^_^

In english, we would say 下戸 is "a weak drinker" or "cannot hold his/her alcohol".
笑い上戸 I have never heard before!! Sounds like a fun word!
We don't have this kind of word in english I think.
Hi Jamas,

I liked this article so much!
I won't understand people's slang when I go abroad.
I learned some slang from lyrics and movies, though.

Personally, I like "Messed up".
I also like "messy". Oh, but I am not messy!

I wanna learn more slang by the time Iwill study abroad.
I'm gonna study abroad for 2007 fall.
I haven't decided the country I go yet, but there are
various kind of sister universities of my university
all over the world.
I cannot wait studying abroad!! It must be very interesting!

By the way, what do you thin is good for learning slang?
Hi Kaori,

Sorry to be so late in answering....^_^
Thank you for the interesting drinking words in Japanese!! I think in english, we usually put the kind of drinker in front of "drunk".
So for example:
Happy when drinking: "Happy Drunk"
Sad when drinking: "Sad Drunk"
Angry when drinking: "Angry Drunk"
Quiuet when drinking: "Quiet Drunk"

A person who drinks too much, is called "A Drunk"
Of course, drinking with happy people is bestネ^_^

Hi Mari,

Wow, will you study abroad in 2007?
Wonderful!! ^_^
Your english is really good already, so when you study abroad, you are gonna do great I am sure!!

The best way to learn slang?
Well...this community is the best way of course!! ^_^
Hehehe
Just joking ^_^

Well, slang is a little tough to learn. I think the best way is to live in the culture.
If you hear it everyday in the native language, it is easier to know how to use this slang.
Movies and music are great ways to learn too!!
I think music is great for slang, but not good for "real" english. ^_^
