Report on Abandoned and Abused Cats in Manko Park in Naha
City Okinawa Prefecture
Information in this report came from caretakers for stray
cats of Manko Park in Naha-city, Okinawa, Japan. Several
years ago someone started abusing and killing stray cats
living in Manko Park. It started in February, 2008. Bodies
of abused cats were frequently found in the park. The
caretakers have found more than 50 cats' bodies that ware
killed after abusing. The incidents seemed to cease around
October, 2008 but it started again in January of 2009.
Through July of this year, the caretakers found eleven
abused cats' bodies.
The Kerubimu Animal Rescue League (NPO) will
petition to the Naha-City police office to investigate
these incidents and increase security in the park. As of
July 11, 2009, 6,265 signatures have been collected for
the petition.
On June 12, 2009 one of the caretakers (not a member of
the NPO, but a person highly familiar with the
situation) presented a detailed report to the police
office. Since January, 2009 many settled cats disappeared,
although the cat population in the park remains high
because many irresponsible owners continue to abandon
their cats in the park. The local residents have filed
many complaints with the city regarding the stray
cats.Even though the caretakers spay and neuter the stray
cats, the large number of abandoned cats make it difficult
to control the size of the population.
No suspects have been
apprehended yet.
