u know, we Japanese have done whaling for hundreds of years and we continue to do whaling for scientic purpose.
On the other hand, many countries, especially USA, EU and Australia, says human beings should ban on whaling.
the rasons for disagreeing with whaling are 1 the whale is very wise, so killing such a wise creature is cruel. 2 the whale is on the edge of extinction because of excessive hunting. 3 now, few people eat whales, so whaling is less necessary. ...etc
against these claims, people agreeing with whaling says that " whaling is our culture!" , " the number of whales have been incresing!!"...etc
my opinion is that Japan doesn't have to stop whaling.
but, we intend to insist our opinions emotionaly when we discuss the whaling issue, and sucha discussion is fruitless.
So,
let's think of this problem not in terms of culture or believes but based on the reality!
today's IWC is a place of a political conflict( it takes very long time to explain the reason for this, so Please ask me if u want to know^^;)and it hasn't been able to take effective measure to protect whales.
it is true that the number of whales have been incresing, but some kinds, a blue whale, are still on the verge of extinction.
Therefore, I think, we must scientifically make sure which kinds are necessary to protect and which ones are not. Then, we should consider each way to protect each kind.
And
I think Japan has the responsibility to do so actively in IWC, as a whaling country.
what do u think of whaling issue???
*I have resreched this issue, and I have a lot of things to write, but this diary is too short. So, maybe you don't undrstand what I mean. I'm sorry for this<(_ _)>
ummmm....
I do not know much about IWC or whaling, but from the point of view of law, culture
has no meaning (or, to be more exact, less meaning than human rights)
while, people have the right to eat whale...maybe
The source of this right should be the right to pursuit of happiness
(in the Constituion of Japan Article13)
in the other hand, because ocean is a public place, peoplle have rights to enjoy the
good enviroment of ocean.
The source should be the right to pursuit of happiness, too.
Is it right?? Naoki??
So, we should consider which happiness is important.
well, I'm not sure this opinion is right, coz this is just a casual idea.
I dont know what does IWC mean either, so I cant understand the paragraph where you used this term.you should explain this term,Jun! ><
But,anyway, though I think too much whailing is a problem whailing itself is not a problem like this.Rather the attitude toward whale is a problem,I feel. More correctly, someone's comment that because whale is wise animal, you must not whailing is nonsense,I feel.
And Arata's opinion is interesting. We originally have the right to pursuit for happiness....it is a difficult problem for all of the people in the world. But I think we should take the happiness for the other animails into consideration, coz we all live in the same world, the earth. Therefore,I think we should consider not which happiness is significent but all of the livinghood's happiness. That's very important thing for this kind of problem.
>ARATA
I understand your opinion. It is very intersting.
ummmmmm...
eating whales is certainly the right to enjpy hapiness as you say.
I didn't come up with the idea!!
>hiroshi
IWC means International Whaling Commission. I'm sorry that I didn't explain it(>_<)
In fact, we humans no longer fish whales too much now, so, as u say, whaling is not a problem in terms of this .
I seeeeee...
the Japanese attitude toward whales may be different from that of the West.your opinion is right!!
But, I think maybe if we want to protect whales effectively we shouldn't take the attitude into too much consideration, because taking too much account of the attitude may become discussing culture and in this way dispute about whaling may go in circles(堂々巡り)
>mizuki
after reading your opinion, I know whaling issue is related to "the animal rights". I want to discuss this topic in my EA or AA!!!
and...
IWC is International Whaling Commission, I explain again.
this institution was established to prevent from getting whales too much about 60 years ago.
at first, IWC was composed of countries agreeing with whaling, for example US, UK and Austraria(can u belive Austraria was a whaling country 50 years ago!!!???)
but, the western countries retreated from the whaling industry because petrolium took place of whale oil, and these countries became ones disagreeing with whaling.
Now, whaling countries, such as Japan and Sweden, are critisized in IWC.
Hi, this is Naoaki Inayoshi.
Excuse me for being late to write a comment on the diary.
Even though I hear and recognize the whaling issue, I always have a difficulty coming up with the right answer. In other words, I think this is a really complicated problem.
As it is mentioned, maybe whaling is one of the Japan's unique culture and should be protected. Furthermore, whaling is necessary for a scientific research of a certain fields, such as oceanography. I can understand the significance of keeping a country's uniqueness in the world of globalization, and expanding the knowledge of human beings. However, it is equally essential to save animals from extinction. Also, it may not be true but I heard that Japan sends researchers to ocean near the Antarctic. I wonder whether it is "Japan's culture" if they are whaling at the place far away from its own country.
There are also questionable parts on the arguments of people who are against whaling. Though I think people above have already referred to this, it is the right or the happiness of animals. I surely feel that people should protect animals. Yet, does the right of animals really exist? This is my main concern. If every animals or living species have the right to live, we humans are violating other species' right. This occurs not only when we eat, but in daily life. For example, we often kill bugs like ants without noticing.
Well, anyway, what I was trying to say was that I cannot make a clear decision. There are parts I doubt or wonder on both sides' opinion.
Though, I think this issue is certainly an interesting topic!
Hi! This is Saori.
Thank you, jun. and Im sorry I am late writing...
My opinion is near to Eri's.
Why we people discuss only whaling???
I wondered, so examined the issue(by HP "JAPAN WHALING ASSOCIATION") .
As a result, there are no endangered whales in the world, now.
According to JARPA(Japan’s Whale Research Program under Special Permit in the Antarctic), the resource of young minke whales is abundant, and increasing healthily.
Also, there are so many whales around Jpn(northwest Pacific).
So,I think that we dont have to stop whaling.
"whaling is culture." is good thought,i think.
It maybe true that the whale is very wise and we are sorry for it, but other spiecies are the same!!
Cattle or pigs are stupid?? (This idea may be extreme...)
If we discuss whether whaling is forbidden, we must consider other animals. All animals are alive!
But, too much hunting should be,of course, cracked down.
This is my opinion. If you have any question, ask me please.
