一応自分で考えてみたんですが、まずopenは形容詞の用法が多く、次に自動詞、そして他動詞はなんか無理やりなニュアンスを含むよう(he opens the door with a crowber.みたいな)。だから形容詞のopenでOK。
次にleave+O+CのCは状態を表す。一方、過去分詞は動作動詞が形容詞として名詞を修飾する、すなわち限定用法が一般的。be動詞の補語としてなら形容詞化した過去分詞はOK(He left his homework half-finished.みたいな)。openedは形容詞化するほど使われていないし、be動詞の補語ではない。
He left the door opened by that pretty cat.

例:a dream come true (実現した夢)
非対格自動詞の過去分詞が名詞を修飾している例としては、例えば:
(1) wilted lettuce(しおれたレタス), a fallen leaf(落ち葉),
an escaped convinct(脱走した受刑者), burst pipes(破裂したパイプ),
rotted railings(腐った欄干), sprouted wheat(発芽した小麦),

a grown man(成人), the assembled company(集まった人々、仲間),
a deceased presbyterian leader(死んだ長老派教会の指導者),
the falllen and unfortunate king of France,

(20) the train recentry arrived(少し前に着いた列車)
私も、やはり「be opened:動作」と「be open:状態」の区分だと考えます。
be closed など「be 過去分詞」で「状態」を表すものはたくさんあると思いますが、
be opened にはそれが当てはまらない(open と住み分けができている)のだと思います。
まあ、あくまで語法上の「本則」であって、実例では「許容」は見られるとは思いますが。
一応、文献上の根拠を挙げておきます。
『Practical English Usage (3rd edition)』§399
We normally use "open," not "opened," as as adjective.
"Opened" is used as the past tense and past participle of the verb "open," to talk about the action of opening.
まずトピ主さんの
He left the door opened.はなぜいけないかのかについては、
「形容詞形があるものは分詞を形容詞として使わない」ということだ思います。
過去分詞ではありませんが、
He is alive.と言って、
「生きている」という意味で He is living.とは言わないです。
これと同じことだと了解しています。
ましてや、語源は知らないですが、openが単体であったら、ほとんどの人が形容詞だと思うでしょうね。動詞は形容詞からの転用だと考えていいと思います。
形容詞なんだけれども、動詞としても使うという単語はそんなに多くはないですね(clear,clean,free...ざっと考えるとこれくらいしか思い浮かばないです)
それから、
He left the door opened by the pretty cat.
これは状況としてありえないと思います。
leaveは「位置的に離れる」という意味ではなく、
to depart from something/somebody which is supposed to be togetherとか、
to depart from something which is supposed to be under one's controlとか、to depart from somewhere one is supposed to beという意味だと了解しています。
更に、21Megumiさんの掲げられた文:
When I got downstairs, knowing that I had left the door open,
to my surprise it was shut and no one was in the house!
Now, I decided to go to my friends house cause now I was scared
but I had to wait for my laundry to dry.
So, I again, left the door opened and went back upstairs.
たいへん不躾ですが、第1文の構成、カンマの不備、
第2文でのnowの重複、アロストロフィの落ち、
第3文のカンマとagainの位置を考えると、決して模範にするに足る英文とは思えないです。
この英文としての不備は別にしても、
第1文と第2文で、冗長といえるほどに事細かに描写しているにも関わらず、
第3文で、「戸を開けた」という行為そのものをなぜ語らないのかが理解できないです。
以上の理由で、
So, I again, left the door opened and went back upstairs.
この文は、 So,I opened the door again and went back upstairs.で簡単に表せる内容だと思います。
