When we grew up, we all went through different circumstances, culture, education, social value, and etc.

As a child, do you remember the first words you let out?

I think for most of the cases it's either "mama", or "papa".
(someone told me his first word was "food", and he's hungry since 1981)

They became Japaense words as well since they are simple to pronounce.

As you get older, you start listening to the patterns of all the consonants and vowels generated by your parents as examples and all of us became the expert in using your own language.

I don't remember I was having a difficult time in picking up what they were saying simply because I wasn't making any "effort" to do so.

I have many friends who can use 4 different languages as their native languages.(Yes.. Belgium is a crazy country where the best linguists live on this plannet) Common thing for them is that they have never made any efforts but learned their languages through their "Friends", "Music", and "Movies".

Yes. I think learning languages have to be fun for

(1) keeping your interest (studying in long terms)
(2) your language ability to become natural(especially for pronunciation)

Let's go back to the way we used to be!
However there are few people who could go back their mental state to our age of freedom. lol

I have found many people who would like to study Japanese in the States, and Europe. They seemed that they didn't have any clue where they could throw their enthusiasm in learning Japanese.
I told them that they could watch lots of mangas and anime in Japanese because they are full of examples of daily conversation.
We as Japanese only learned "keigo" in school.I think no one won't be speaking fluent Japaense if they start learning "keigo" first. But in a reality that's what they do in most of Japanese learning school for westerners. As a result, most of them lost their interest in learning, assuming it's impossible for them to aquire the ability to speak it... much less for writing.yeah it's sad...

So what is your method of learning languages?
Let's have a time to look back how we are approaching in learning Japanese.Maybe from tomorrow your way of studying Japanese will change.

Keigo is very difficult to learn...冷や汗
where I was taught though, we didn't start out with it right away. That would be so overwhelming! Surely it would discourage a lot of newcomers to Japanese language..げっそり
Where I live, students don't learn the really polite, honorific, and humble speech until the 4th year of study in high school or at college in the 5th or 6th year. I think that its a pretty good system. First I learned basics like hiragana, katakana, phrases, and introductions. No kanji til the second year of class.
Manga and anime really can be helpful practice. Also dramas! わーい(嬉しい顔)
But i think the best way to learn a language would be to immerse yourself in the culture, surround yourself by native speakers and you'll learn it in no time ウインク
わーい(嬉しい顔) Heeey Haley!! Thank you for your very interesting comment!

It seems you have a very good place to learn Japanese.
As you have pointed out, if you start learning keigo, lots of people will run away :).

Immersing yourself in the culture surrounded by native speakers would help you for sure!

I will keep posting something new and I'm sure your comments are helpful for others as well!
