This is what Mr. Yamaya, our current president and a vice president for ORIX Real Estate to-be-in-2-days, taught me yesterday.
When you would like to shut up a mouth of American or British who is singing his or her own pride of their country or culture, please throw a question below:
"What did your ancestors do in your country 1500 years ago?"
The United States of America is much less than 1500 years old, and so is Great Britain, around 1000 years old or so.
So they can nothing but shut up his or her mouth with this question.
Mr. Yamaya also said that Horyu-ji in Nara has been functioning for 1300 years now. But outside Japan, there msut be no building structure like this which is still functioning. Such the old ones must be enjoyed as a historical heritage, not as it used to be.
I have been really impressed with the fact. Don't you think it is so amazing that the temple still alive in this world today? How interesting and unique culture we Japanese have!
Thanks for the tips Hiroko.
Yes we have a great long history but to my shame, I really don't know much about our history. I just did good in exam. Now I strongly feel I need to know about JAPAN. I will read "武士道”as Mieko-san recommended. Hiroko, would you tell us the exact title and author of "武士道” in both Japanese & English version.
Anyway, in my experience, I tried hard to shut up Middle East people's mouths when I was in America. They always insist strongly. My solution is just ignore them at that time. I'll find another ways.
"BUSHIDO" by Inazo Nitobe
「武士道」新渡戸稲造著 須知徳平訳 (講談社インターナショナル)
Also, my friend who spent her school girl days in NY strongly recommended the book below:
"The Book of Tea" by Tenshin Okakura
「茶の本」岡倉天心著 千宗室訳 (講談社インターナショナル)
Akiko introduced me a book which illustrates Japan in every specifics. Its title is 「日本 〜その姿と心〜」(日鉄技術情報センター編). She will tell us more about the book here.
