Do you read Japanese novels to improve your language skills? I'd like to pick up a few books written by Japanese authors but I have little idea where to start.

If anyone has any recommendations please list them here. Please could you also roughly indicate the level of the book with regards to JLPT level (I am starting with children's books so don't by shy).

Well, always one for an imporbable challenge, I started off by reading Haruki Murakami. The first book I read nearly broke my brain - it was taking me about a week to read a page, but now (about 2 years later) I'm skipping through (short!) stories with little need to check my dictionary.

I think it helps that I'd read the same books in English, so I went into it with a good idea of what to expect from each story. So if there are any translations of books that you've read in English, that might be a great place to start. Or maybe the novelisation of a Japanese drama you enjoyed?

Hope that helps! Sorry not to list any actual titles

I'm reading "Ningen Shikkaku" (人間失格) by Osamu Dazai now. The guy at the book store said it was a book jr high school students like to read, but its a little gloomy. I think next I'll find something a little more recent.

I try to avoid reading books that I've already read in English, if I know the story I'm less motivated to finish reading it.

I've found Banana Yoshimoto to be a fairly easy read in Japanese... she's liberal with the furigana.

I love Haruki Murakami's books. But I haven't read any of them in Japanese.

西の魔女が死んだ by 梨木香歩 Nashiki Kaho is one that I just picked up at the bookstore one day, it was one of the top-ranked by someone books. I haven't finished it yet, but I've enjoyed what I've read so far.

I'm also reading a teen mystery/detective series that I grabbed off the shelf in the school library. Which is great because the font is big. Though, I've found the dialogue to be a bit difficult to understand... it's more colloquial than I'm used to.
Thanks a lot for the great feedback. I am definately going to pick up some Banana Yoshimoto/Haruki Murakami books in Japan.

ハヤポンさん、そのリンクありがとうございます!
What a great site! I didn't know you could download entire novels like that.

if you are in Japan I recomend you to go to 100 yen shop and get those japanese classics they sell there. They have this collection with famous japanese writers (natsume souseki, akutagawa, tanizaki, etc) and some of their most famous books, a little bit simplified and with the hurigana and some explanations. i read a whole bunch a couple of years ago and they were very good. plus they are only 100 yen!

good luck everyone with the JLPT!!
I'd go for Murakami Haruki's collection of short stories entitled "カンガルーの日和”。We studied "タクシーに乗った吸血鬼”and another story with the same title as the book.

Not too hard, pretty funny, challenging but not impossible .
I just scored at Book Off today, 5 books by Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto... 105yen each.

Everyone in Japan knows about Book Off, right?
You should go for「気まぐれロボット」
by 星新一 (ほししんいち)
He's a well-know sci-fi novelist, i really do like the way he has written that book and even if it is furiganaless, the story will hook-up you until the end, however the novels aren't that long, (few pages each). You should focus on each for a week to understand every little nuances and gather a lot of new vocabulary, grammatical forms, kanjis reading in an amusing way. I think the level is approximately 3−2級 but you'll manage easly if you are living in japan. I enclosed the link where you'll find the english translated version but i strongly recommend you to read it in japanese first!!!

Have fun with your read!
I'm really grateful for all the input. I'm in Japan until Friday so I'll pop into a book shop or two over the next few days and see what I can pick up. The first port of call might indeed have to be Book Off!
