Last Saturday, I held my first 'Wine and Cheese' class at my company's Shinjuku office. Only a few students showed up, but we had a good time and learned about wine together in English.
Because my (留学関係) company doesn't use our counselling rooms after 19:00, I recently began to use the space once or twice a week to teach fun 'hobby-based' English classes related to my interests (music, art, design, and film).
On saturday, we talked about the differences between Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and other Bordeaux varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc. I brought several bottles of wine as well as some comte and bleu cheeses.
We were all most impressed with the Chilean 'Portal Del Alto Reserva' Cabernet Sauvignon (with a fruity smell of cherry and plum as well as a hint of cedar wood) and disappointed with the French 'Chateau Fongrave' Bordeaux (a mix of merlot and cabernet franc grapes). However, none of us are wine experts and the wines were all relatively cheap!
I am sorry I didn't let the community know about it beforehand. I decided to do it quite suddenly and was a little nervous as to how it would go.
I will hold another 'Wine and Cheese' English class from 19:00-21:30 on Friday, November 4th. If you are interested in attending, please let me know. I will provide wine and cheese. The cost is 2000 yen for the class and 1000 yen for the wine and cheese. It will be held on the 10th floor of the 新宿住友ビル (the triangular building) in West Shinjuku。 Please ask me if you have any questions.
よろしくお願いします.
Sorry for the advertisement!
I know that many of you don't want to pay to learn a language that you already know! I guess I am trying to do something different from Nova. Of course, I am also interested in drinking wine at restaurants and wine bars in the Tokyo area with anyone who wants to. Let's get together sometime and find some good wine and cheese!
Thank you for inviting us to your hobby English class.
I would like to join the class on Nov 4th.
Can I invite some of my friends who might not be accessing mixi, but the people who used to learn English together in a language class? All of them are interested in learning English and/or love wine mad cheese.
Thank you for the message!
I am sorry I didn't see it until today. I have been quite busy lately.
I am really glad you can come to my Wine and Cheese class on November 4th. Please bring some friends! It will be a really fun and casual atmosphere. I will try to get some good wine and cheese!
One of the reasons I am starting these hobby classes is to give people who have returned from studying abroad a chance to speak English in an enjoyable environment. Of course, the class is for anyone interested in speaking English and talking about/drinking wine.
Please let me know how many friends you will bring so that I know how much wine and cheese to get.
Thank you for your invitation!
Wine and Cheese English class sounds really interesting, but unfortunately I can't join the Nov. 4th class because I'm going to NY from Oct. 29 to Nov. 5th...
Please let me participate in the next class!
And of course, I'm looking forward to getting together at some wine bar or restaurant in Tokyo soon!
Have a great time in New York! It is ironic that you are returning to Japan on the 5th. I am going to New York on November 6th! We will just miss each other. Unfortunately, my trip will be for work and not pleasure (of course, it is hard not to have fun in NYC!). Are you going for work or for vacation? I hope you eat some good food and drink some great wine!
Suika-san,
Thanks for letting your friends know. We will have a wonderful time! I'll talk to you again soon.
It's really a shame that I can't see you in NY!
I'm going to NY for vacation.
Actually it's my fouth visit there, so one of my plans of this time is to find some good bars and restaurants to drink wine.
And also I'm going to join a winery tour in NY.
I didn't know that NY is quite famous as a production area of wine next to California.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting together at a wine bar in Tokyo and joining your Wine and Cheese English class.
Yeah, it is a shame that our travel plans don't overlap. I am jealous that you get to go there for vacation. I look forward to hearing about the bars, restaurants and wines you find. Of course, this community also expect a report on New York wines! I knew that some wines were produced in upstate New York, however, I have never tried them before. Being from the west coast, I am most familiar with California, Washington, Oregon and Idaho wines.
I am also looking forward to meeting up after we have both returned. Have a great trip!
Unfortunately, my friend are not available on Nov 4 class.
It seems to be a little bit short notice for the day between a national holiday and a weekend.
So I will not bring my friends.
No problem about your friends! It will be nice to meet you. So far, three other people are planning to come. I think a group of 5-6 people will probably be perfect. Everyone will get a chance to do a lot of talking (and drinking)! See you.
If anyone is interested, I will be having another wine lesson this Friday (December 2nd) in Shinjuku. Last time, we drank a lot of good wines (especially the '96 Fitou!) and had some enjoyable conversation. If you want to join us, please contact me. Yoroshiku!
How are you? It's getting sooo cold, isn't it?
Unfortunately again, I cannot join the lesson today...
I'm looking forward to the next opportunity.
Anyway, today I finally bought "Tarapaca" online!
It'll be delivered in a couple of days.
So I'll let you know how I think as soon as I try it.
One of my favorite cheese is "Mondor" (Sorry, but I'm not sure the spell is correct...). Do you know it? It's sold only during winter time. So now is the very season for this cheese.
It looks like a big camembert cheese, but its inside is sooooo creamy!
Hi aiai-san, thanks for the comment. No problem about not being able to attend the lesson. I hope you can come sometime, because the lessons have been a lot of fun! On friday, we started with a Chardonnay from Australia before having a decent Californian Merlot (2002 Trinity Oaks). We finished up with a Cabernet Sauvignon that was quite tasty, however, I cannot remember the name right now. We also ate some delicious cheeses including parmesano, mimolette, and Danish brie.
I look forward to hearing your opinion on the Tarapaca. I hope you like it. What kind did you get?
I have never heard of 'Mondor' cheese, but it sounds really good. Where is it made? Now, I am hungry too!
By the way, if you get some time, please post a comment here about the wines you had in New York State. I am interested to hear if you had anything impressive.
Last Thursday, I opened Tarapaca Cavernet Sauvignon 2003!
I really like its taste. Rich and strong for its price...I couldn't believe it was only 980 yen.
And last night I drunk the remaining half of the bottle. I was surprized that It had become even smoother, not sour.
Seth-san, thank you for recommending such a good, reasonable wine!
Now I have to buy more bottles of Tarapaca.
As for the wines I had in NY...
I visited three wineries in Hadson Valley, the oldest area of wine production in the US, they said.
Overall, the wines there were relatively young, fruity and sweet. And actually I don't like sweet wines so much, therefore there wasn't nothing impressive... But as the senery around Hudson Valley was so beatiful with autumn colors of leaves, I could have a great time there.
Well, according to the sommelier who guided us around the wineries (she is Japanese and used to work for the famous sommelier in Japan), this area is blessed with a good weather condtition suitable for wine production and thus has a great potential. So they'll come to produce much better wines in the future.
I also went to some wine bars and restaurants in Manhattan and I found a good Spanish wine bar.
They serve good Spanish "Tapas" dishes, and especially I love their raw ham, "Hamon," which goes really well with Spanish red wines. I drunk some wines recommended by the bartender and all of them were good... Sorry, I forgot the names... because I was drunk at that time...
Anyway, I'm going to my friend's house from now and we'll have some good wines with "Mondor"!
I'll post some comments on it again.
Hi aiai, thanks for telling us about your trip! It sounds like you had a great time. I agree with you that the Hudson valley has some beautiful scenery, especially during the autumn. I was lucky to take a bus through the area just a few days after you! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stop for any wine! You mentioned that the wines were quite sweet. What kind of grapes were being grown?
I hope you get a chance to tour some of the wineries in my home state (Washington) or its neighbors (Idaho, California) sometime. Perhaps you already have.
Actually, I drank much more beer in America than I did wine. I think it is because there are a lot of good local beers in America that I can't get in Japan. Good wine, on the other hand, is actually easier to get in Japan I believe!
I am really glad you liked the Tarapaca. I really think that Chile is the best place right now for reasonable Cabernet Sauvignon. Can I ask you where you ordered it from? 980 yen a bottle! That's a great deal.
I hope we get a chance to drink some wine together sometime soon. If we can get 5-6 people to each bring a bottle of wine sometime, we can have a great home-party!
Of course, I will be having another English wine class in January as well. I will let you know when I choose the date.
