Ben Wallace lets his actions do the talking
Sunday, April 23, 2006
By A. Sherrod Blakely

AUBURN HILLS -- When the names of the Detroit Pistons starters are announced before each game, Ben Wallace is the last one who is introduced.

However, when it comes to the playoffs, all of the Pistons know who comes first.

For all the talk about Detroit's much-improved offense this season, and that it was a catalyst for the Pistons winning a franchise-record 64 games, players understand that their postseason success hinges heavily on how closely they follow the ways of their defensive-minded leader.

"He's (Wallace) the cornerstone," said Joe Dumars, Detroit's president of basketball operations. "His mentality, his approach, his attitude -- it sets the table for everything that happens on the court."

And yet, Wallace rarely shows the demonstrative traits often associated with players who are considered team leaders.

Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter believes that has a lot to do with Wallace's upbringing.

"Growing up in the south makes you a little different," said Hunter, who is from Jackson, Miss. "We're used to showing, and not talking about it. That's just the way it was down there. And a lot of guys I played with, they had that same attitude. It's something you have inside of you, and Ben has it, that ability to say, `Hey, I'm not going to tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to show you . . . just come with me."'

The Pistons have done just that, which is one of the reasons they have evolved into one of the NBA's elite teams since Wallace arrived in Detroit in 2000.

A native of White Hall, Ala., Wallace credits his family for instilling in him at an early age the need to get the job done, and not just talk about it.

"They (older relatives) were told a lot of things that didn't really happen for them, like the struggle with racism and all that stuff," Wallace said. "Everybody was saying they would find a way (to overcome problems) -- we gonna do this, we gonna do that -- but it never happened the way they were told it would. So when I was coming up, they didn't allow me to sit back and talk about things. They always encouraged me to go out and do things."

Earlier this month, when frustrated with the lack of ball movement on offense, Wallace decided not to re-enter a game in the fourth quarter against the Orlando Magic that the Pistons wound up losing, 89-87.

Wallace knows he could have yelled at his coaches and teammates about the matter, but his action -- or rather, inaction -- made the point crystal clear.

"That's just how he is," said teammate Richard Hamilton. "He's always been about leading by example, rather than talking about it. That's what makes him such a great player, a great team leader."

It didn't take long for Detroit's rookies to see that this is Ben Wallace's team.

After practice, when most of the starters head to the showers or to the weight room, Wallace sticks around to work on his low-post moves, jump shots, and even his free throws (he's a notoriously poor free-throw shooter). Then, Wallace usually spends time in the weight room before heading home.

"The guy's an all-star, and he's still out here with us rookies after practice," said Pistons first-year player Alex Acker. "He's just showing you, this is what it takes to be great in this league. As a young guy like me, you have to respect that and look up to him for that, definitely."

Wallace has been told many times how other players respect his work ethic. To him, it's not a big deal.

"This is only way I know how to do things," he said. "We all have a job to do. We're professionals. There's a lot of teams and players that talk about what they're going to do and things like that. That's just not me. The less talk, the more work you can get done."
