I'll take the next one もしくは I'll take the stairs と言いますね。
What you're saying is not true...
After you means "Please go ahead of me, Please pass through ahead of me", and it doesn't mean "Please go ahead without me". It implies that you're following right behind... like when you open a door and let someone go ahead of you and you go through after that person.
If you're letting an elevator full of people go and waiting for the next one because you can't fit in there, then you need to mean "Please go ahead WITHOUT me".
And by the way, people do wait for you even if the elevator seems a bit full... at least here in Canada :-)
私は、沢山の皆様のコメントから、
★自分も乗り降りするが他の人に先に乗り降りして欲しい場合は
「After you.」
★自分は乗らないが他の人に先に乗って欲しい場合は
「Please, go ahead.」
「I'll take the next one.」など
を使うと良いのかな?と勉強させていただきました。
知人などには「see you later.」をつけるというのも良いですね!
一緒に乗った人と違う階で降りるとき
"i'm next floor, so please, go ahead."
という言い方も参考になりました^^
Although the phrase is most frequently used in situations where one would indeed follow close behind, the phrase isn't limited thus.
Before calling doubt, check your facts.Isn't polite to call another a liar.
"After you" only means "I will use x after you."
It doesn't matter much if the object is a door, a cab, or elevator. Granted, there are other phrases that would better suit the situation, or phrases that may be used more frequently. That doesn't make the usage of "after you" any less correct. What say thee?
"If you're letting an elevator full of people go and waiting for the next one because you can't fit in there," then you don't need to say anything. It's full,so you relax your muscles, step back. "If you are one of two last candidates for the last spot,"then "after you" is in no way incorrect.
Trust me. I spoke only English for the first 15 years of my life. I think I know what I'm talking about.
どんだけ After me?」と思いそうです。
After you.
