KEN’s One Point!英会話コミュのLesson No.7 Answer

人とたまたま道などで出会ってどうしてもその人の名前が思い出せないときのフレーズです。
＊I’m sorry.　 What’s your name again?　
わりとストレートに
＊Your name is…….？　とはぐらかす
＊Your name is on the tip of my tongue.
　You’re……..？
ここまで出ているんだけど・・・・
＊Your name has slipped my tongue.
You’re…….?
＊What was your name?
＊May I have/ask your name again?
とても丁寧です
＊Can I have/ask your name again?
＊Ah you are....(wait for his words)

This is an awkward situation to be in in any language I think. Sometimes it is better to ask someone else what the persons name is if you have this chance or if it is really important you can take the direct approach as you all have done very well in your answers. I always found that Japanese people are sometimes too direct when it comes to situations like this and it can be better to wait for the person to mention their name or finding out from someone else in certain situations. It a real case by case thing Try to judge if you are being to direct with small social manners like this. A good example of situation not to ask someone what their name is would be if you met someone more then twice and still can’t remember their name and then ask them. The person may find this rude because they would expect you to remember their name because of the multiple meetings in the past.

In Japanese people don’t seem to have problems with this type of thing but when it comes to dealing with people in English the social rules seem to change because people don’t know what to say. Just remember if you wouldn’t say it to someone in Japanese it probably isn’t good to say in English either think and be polite if you can.
