"could" versus "can"

I'm so angry with him
I could kill him ... i don't really mean what i say.
I can kill him ... i am sure i might kill him.

if my understanding is not correct, could you correct?
It is "I could kill him". Both work but could sounds better in this sentence.
"Can" in this case means specifically the "ability",for example,"the ability to kill"."Could" means a "possibility"-->you're so angry with him that it's likely that killing him could happen.Therefore it should be"could" as the focus is on the possibility rather than ability.
